These measures will gradually build the city into a friendly space, a place worth visiting and living in, especially suitable for the elderly.
Opening a path to the sea
As the sun rose, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hai Yen (65 years old, Son Tra ward) took advantage of the rare rays of sunshine on the chilly winter day to go for a walk on the beach and soak herself in the soft white sand. Mrs. Yen excitedly shared, "Every time I go to the beach, I feel safe because many years ago, the city planned to build a pedestrian walkway to the beach for people with disabilities and the elderly. The walkway makes it safer and more convenient for me and my friends to get to the beach."
For her, the sea is the perfect place to heal both the physical and mental ailments of the elderly. And to reach the water, to touch the sea, without a proper path, would be quite difficult for them, and they might even fall. Therefore, this act is incredibly meaningful and kind, aiming to improve the quality of life for the elderly group like herself.
According to Ms. Yen, having been born and lived in the city for over 60 years, she is not only reassured by the healthcare system but also pleased with the policies and initiatives that care for the lives and health of the elderly. She believes that the elderly don't need anything grand; even small gestures can bring them joy and happiness.
Social security for the elderly
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tho (80 years old, Ngu Hanh Son ward) said that her husband passed away early, and she made a living selling goods from baskets and doing whatever work she could to raise her five children. As she got older and weaker, she had no income and was cared for by her children, even though they themselves faced many difficulties. Therefore, the burden of expenses was a constant worry for her. However, more than two years ago, she received a monthly social retirement allowance of 400,000 VND from the government, which recently increased to 500,000 VND. This money helps her cover her medical expenses and living costs.
Mr. Tho expressed that the money was like a lifeline, giving him faith and motivation to live happily and healthily. He believes that financial stability is the deciding factor in living a long and fulfilling life. Since receiving his social retirement allowance, he feels less burdened, and his children worry less, making meals more warm and joyful.
In addition to receiving a social retirement pension, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tho also receives free health insurance from the government. This allows her to save money on other living expenses.
For Mr. Dang Van Binh (83 years old, An Hai ward), the social retirement allowance has been a great help in both his economic and spiritual life. Because life is still difficult, he has to care for his ailing wife and cover all the expenses. He expressed that the allowance is very precious. For him, the amount is enormous. It's not just the sum, but the kindness and sharing shown towards the elderly.
Small policies, big value.
In addition to building access to the beach, the city also offers a 50% discount on bus fares for people aged 60 and over, people with mild disabilities, impoverished households, students, and others.
Mr. Phan Dinh Phuong (68 years old, Thanh Khe ward) enthusiastically said that he has a habit of visiting places like the Da Nang Museum, the Cham Sculpture Museum, the Dragon Bridge, or the Marble Mountains... Therefore, for many years, he has chosen the bus as his daily means of transportation because it is safe and friendly. While the monthly bus fare reduction may not have a significant economic value, it demonstrates the city's deep concern for the elderly in particular and other groups in general.
It can be said that, in order to build a city that is friendly to the elderly, besides factors such as the environment and family, comprehensive care is needed in terms of both their living conditions and their mental well-being. This will help them live happily, healthily, and with a high quality of life. Because they are companions for us – the younger generation – to learn from, emulate, and promote useful values, contributing to building a better, more ethical, and kind city.
Sharing the same view, Ms. Phung Thi Huong Hanh, Head of the City's Population Department, said that for the elderly to live long and healthy lives, physical and mental factors are very important. These two factors have proven effective over the years, as older adults are not only cared for economically but can also develop their abilities through cultural and sports activities. Because when the elderly are happy, healthy, and mentally comfortable, it forms the foundation for the development of the family and society.
