The world's tallest matchstick structure has been recorded in the Guinness World Records.
The Guardian reported on February 9th that Plaud described a nail-biting and emotional week, like riding a roller coaster, after receiving conflicting information from the Guinness World Records organization.
"For the past eight years, I've been pursuing the goal of creating the world's tallest structure using matchsticks," Plaud said. Specifically, he spent 4,200 hours building a model of the Eiffel Tower from over 706,000 matchsticks and 23 kg of glue.
However, Guinness World Records initially informed the French citizen that his 7.2-meter-tall structure did not qualify for a record. The reason given was that he did not use commercially available matches.
In fact, Mr. Plaud started the project using ordinary matchsticks, cutting off the tips.
Richard Plaud, the new Guinness World Record holder.
After a while, becoming utterly exhausted from having to cut off the ends of each matchstick, he suggested buying matchsticks without ends from the manufacturer.
That is why the Guinness World Records organization initially refused to recognize his model.
However, after some consideration, Mark McKinley, Director of Guinness World Records, expressed his pleasure at being able to award Mr. Plaud the certificate.
"We are pleased to acknowledge that we were strict about the type of matchsticks used, and Mr. Plaud's efforts were truly commendable," said Mr. McKinley.
