The Eiffel Tower in Paris, the capital of France.
Sources familiar with the matter told AFP that the investigation is focusing on the possibility of foreign interference in French affairs.
At around 9 a.m. on June 1st, three people were discovered dumping five life-sized coffins on Quai Branly near the base of the Eiffel Tower, one of the world's most popular tourist attractions.
The coffin contained plaster, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The truck driver transporting the coffins was arrested nearby. He told police he had been paid 40 euros to transport two other people and the coffins.
The driver had arrived in Paris from Bulgaria the previous afternoon.
The other two were arrested while preparing to travel to Berlin, Germany.
One of the three people is a French citizen, one is Ukrainian, and the third is a German citizen.
Besides the coffin-throwing incident near the Eiffel Tower, French authorities also suspect foreign involvement in recent acts of vandalism, including the painting of a handprint in red paint at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Paris last month. Three suspects in that case are believed to have fled the country.
France suspects Russia of being behind the painting of dozens of Star of David symbols on buildings in Paris and its suburbs shortly after Israel launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip in retaliation for Hamas attacks in the south of the country on October 7, 2023. Russia denies any involvement in the vandalism.
