The Eiffel Tower stands out against the night sky in Paris.
Euronews reported that approximately 1,200 tourists were evacuated from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, after a fire broke out in one of the elevator shafts between the first and second floors.
According to a source, the fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. on December 24th, due to one of the elevator cables overheating. The fire was subsequently extinguished, and access to the tower was restricted while authorities dealt with the incident.
Meanwhile, the Boulevard Voltaire newspaper, citing a police source, reported that the fire was caused by an overheating device near the elevator cables.
Many people posted images of the incident at the Eiffel Tower on social media, including some who said they were there when the fire broke out. "We were ordered to evacuate immediately," one witness wrote on social media platform X.
The Eiffel Tower is one of the world's most famous architectural landmarks, attracting an average of 15,000 to 25,000 visitors daily. In January, images and videos circulated on social media claiming a fire had broken out at the Eiffel Tower, but these were later confirmed to be fake news.
A fire broke out at the Eiffel Tower in January 1956 in the tower's television room, causing significant damage, according to Newsweek .
This latest incident occurred more than five years after a devastating fire at another famous French landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Following the fire on April 15, 2019, the building was restored and recently reopened.
