Data from the UK's National Met Office shows that 2025, with over 1,622 hours of sunshine, has officially surpassed the previous record set in 2003.

In the UK, spring 2025 was exceptionally sunny and dry, followed by a record-breaking hot summer. Scientist Mike Kendon from the Met Office explained: "The record was driven by the persistent influence of a high-pressure system, bringing clear skies."

Although the trend of more sunny weather has been underway for several decades, experts are still trying to understand the underlying causes, ranging from climate change to the impact of environmental policies.

Abundant sunshine has become a powerful driving force for the renewable energy industry. Solar power production has surged, providing a stable supply of over 10% of the national electricity demand during peak months and even setting records by supplying over 40% of demand at certain times.

Craig Dyke from the UK's National Energy System operator enthusiastically stated: "It's incredible how far the UK has come – from 3% in 2000 to 60% renewable energy today." UK Energy Secretary Michael Shanks also saw this as a strategic opportunity to enhance energy security and reduce costs for citizens.

However, the downside of this record is the serious economic and social consequences. Agriculture suffered heavy losses due to the drought, with many farmers losing half their harvest. Infrastructure such as railways were affected, while housing unsuitable for the hot climate posed health risks to the population.

Research from Manchester Metropolitan University warns that every degree Celsius increase in summer temperatures could cause a 2.4% drop in UK economic growth. Dr. Lotanna Emediegwu, the study's author, emphasized: "Preparing for hotter summers is no longer purely an environmental issue, but an urgent economic priority."

Alec Hutchings from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) commented: "This data is a clear warning – climate change is not a distant future, it is real and demands immediate action."
