Building the Han Da green tea brand
Tea makers in Han Da commune, Yen Binh district today can be completely proud when Han Da green tea products have been granted a certificate of meeting 3-star OCOP standards. The person who lit the fire and laid the foundation for the change in new production thinking for tea trees in this locality is none other than the Chairman of the Association of War Veterans of Tran Tuong commune. Through the story, we can feel his sincerity and enthusiasm.
Mr. Tran Tuong shared: "I am proud to have 4 years of military service, from February 1979 to 1984 at C18, Regiment 752, Brigade 355, Northern border front. After being discharged from the army and returning to my locality, I have worked in the following positions: Secretary of the Commune Youth Union, Chief of the Commune Police and Chairman of the Association of War Veterans of Han Da Commune from 2012 to present. My family does not make tea or do agriculture , but I realized that local raw materials are available, and people have experience and techniques for producing green tea. In particular, Han Da is located in the downstream area of Thac Ba Lake and borders Chay River, so it has high humidity and favorable climate; there are no factories in the commune, and a clean environment is an important condition for producing clean tea products... This has led me to come up with the idea of establishing a cooperative (HTX) with the desire to gather households determined to build a concentrated raw material area, helping people stabilize production, and distance themselves from the country. Moreover, it builds a brand and reputation for the quality of Han Da green tea products.
Perhaps the military environment has tempered this soldier, not allowing him to be afraid of hardships. In 2015, the Han Da Commune Veterans Cooperative was established with 13 members and the Chairman of the Commune Veterans Association, Tran Tuong, is the Director. Currently, the Cooperative has developed 34 members, mainly members of the Commune Veterans Association and 126 members associated in the production and processing of green tea products. The Cooperative has built a tea material area of over 70 hectares according to VietGAP standards.
Mr. Tran Tuong said: "Currently, the whole Han Da commune has nearly 400 households producing green tea, the local tea area is nearly 200 hectares. The cooperative has cooperated with sectors, unions and Thai Nguyen University to organize training and technical guidance for members and households associated with green tea production to implement the care and harvesting process according to VietGAP standards. The cooperative's raw material area has 5 hectares of tea that have been granted a certificate of growing area code".
In 2024, Director of the Cooperative Tran Tuong boldly invested in new technology equipment in production, using a biomass gasification experimental heat supply furnace, an all-electric drying furnace to improve quality, ensuring clean and safe products. Han Da green tea products have participated in promotion at many fairs in the provinces: Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Son La, Lai Chau, Dien Bien, Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa; participated in the Northwest and Southeast Fairs held in Lao Cai province, the Red River Delta Fair held in Hanoi ; participated in product introduction activities with countries in Yen Bai organized by the Department of Industry and Trade of the province. Since the end of 2024, Director Tran Tuong has tested the use of new fertilizers in tea care with good results, initially connecting product output, of which over 5 tons of dried tea buds were exported as raw products...
Director Tran Tuong added: "Currently, the Cooperative focuses on promoting and mobilizing households to invest in the care stage according to the technical process of deep processing to have high-quality tea products, meeting market demand. The goal is to build products that meet standards in the supermarket system and complete the standards for Han Da green tea products to achieve 4-star OCOP in the following years."
Inspire, engage community
It can be seen that the movement of war veterans doing business in Yen Bai not only has the meaning of developing household economy but also is a channel to inspire and unite the community. War veterans, with their prestige and experience, have been and are the ones who ignite the desire to contribute to the younger generation; guiding people towards the goal of sustainable production, applying science and technology, preserving the environment and preserving identity. Few people know that the Director of Suoi Giang Cooperative, Van Chan District, Lam Thi Kim Thoa, had two and a half years of military service at the Provincial Military Command. The success of Suoi Giang Cooperative today has the courage of a soldier, the spirit of self-reliance, boldness in innovating thinking and doing, breaking out of the rut to find a suitable direction.
The soldiers on that new front still remember Uncle Ho's teachings: "Loyal to the Party, filial to the people, complete every task, overcome every difficulty, defeat every enemy". As a member of the Veterans Association of Van Chan district, Ms. Kim Thoa always remembers the words of General Vo Nguyen Giap: "The first thing in everything is that our fellow veterans have qualities and faith, and must also have the spirit of self-renewal. "The qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" give each veteran the determination and willpower to overcome difficulties in all tasks, including the task of always being exemplary in all aspects, contributing to economic and social development, and legitimate and legal enrichment".
Testing herself in difficult land, in 2007, Suoi Giang Cooperative was established, also known as "Compatriot Cooperative" because the members of the Cooperative are mainly Mong people. With the capacity of Suoi Giang Cooperative, with her own way of doing things, overcoming herself, overcoming the fearful and distrustful eyes, the bravery of a soldier does not allow her to falter.
By persistently mobilizing and helping the Mong people here to transform their production form from small-scale, extensive, self-sufficient, low-efficiency to cooperative production, commercial production on a larger scale and production according to the value chain, Suoi Giang Cooperative has become one of the units with a skilled workforce in tea production and processing in the province.
The factory has met HACCP standards; the raw material area has been granted a Geographical Indication certificate; the tea trees are numbered to trace the origin of the growing area; Tuyet Son Tra products of Suoi Giang Cooperative have met 4-star OCOP standards. Currently, the Cooperative has 6 types of products named Tuyet Son Tra with good quality, packaged with beautiful designs, gradually dominating the domestic and foreign markets.
Director Lam Thi Kim Thoa confided: "I really feel very happy, the years in the army have forged my confidence to enter the business world. The bravery of a veteran has helped us achieve initial success, maintaining our reputation in business, producing quality products, having a stable market share; production and business activities are higher year after year, contributing significantly to the local socio-economic development. That shows that the cooperative has determined a direction suitable to regional conditions, contributing to job creation, hunger eradication, poverty reduction, improving and raising the living standards of ethnic minorities in Van Chan, creating a stable source of income for people, making an important contribution to preserving and developing ancient tea gardens, building new rural areas in the locality".
War veteran Lam Thi Kim Thoa - Director of Suoi Giang Cooperative, Van Chan district introduces tea products to the War Veterans' Working Group of Emulation Cluster No. 2 of the Northern provinces.
In Mu Cang Chai district, the bravery and tradition of "Uncle Ho's soldiers" were tested through the military environment with the spirit of setting an example first, doing first, helping many war veterans return to normal life and gain the trust and admiration of the people. There are many war veteran models with creative and effective ways of doing things, bringing high economic value that are maintained and developed sustainably such as: mobilizing children to go to school regularly; caring for and protecting forests of war veterans in Che Tao commune; the "3 green" movement of the Lao Chai village war veterans association, Lao Chai commune; participating in caring for and training the habit of boarding and semi-boarding activities, educating revolutionary traditions for the young generation of the Nam Khat commune war veterans association; experiencing tourism and cultural traditions of the Mong community of the Hang Chua Xay village war veterans association, Che Cu Nha commune...
It can be seen that, on the journey of innovation and homeland construction, the Yen Bai war veterans today continue to affirm their pioneering and exemplary role in economic development. They carry the spirit of a soldier, the qualities of "Uncle Ho's soldiers", not afraid of difficulties and hardships on the production and business front, enriching their families and making practical contributions to the community. The persistent and silent efforts of these restless soldiers have contributed to enriching the homeland of Yen Bai.
