Recently, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency, proposed a plan to eliminate boarding passes and the check-in process at airports within the next three years.
Instead of having to carry physical identification documents as before, passengers only need a "digital travel credential" on their mobile phones. This "digital travel credential" includes passport and flight information.
When checking in, passengers simply need to walk through a facial recognition machine or scan a barcode to complete the process.
There are concerns that personal information could be leaked when scanning barcodes or using facial recognition.
In response to this issue, ICAO experts stated that all recorded data would be deleted from the computer system after 15 seconds to prevent any breaches of personal information.
Additionally, boarding passes will be issued as non-physical cards on mobile phones.
This means passengers will no longer have to present their boarding pass to security and their passport at the check-in counter as they do now.
This will help passengers avoid the hassle of searching for their boarding passes before each flight, or the frantic rush to check in before each flight.
Aviation experts predict these changes will significantly shorten the security screening process at airports.
However, passengers still have to go through general security checks at airport security checkpoints, and still have to queue to check in their luggage as before.
Valérie Viale, director of the travel technology company Amadeus, told Times magazine that these improvements represent the biggest change in the last 50 years.
On the other hand, in order to implement this technology, airports must upgrade their infrastructure, including facial recognition technology and mobile device-based passport readers.
