The patient, a 19-month-old girl from Dinh Cuong commune, Quang Ngai province, was admitted to the hospital with multiple deep lacerations to her head and cheeks, bleeding profusely. Upon admission, doctors and nurses promptly provided first aid, applied pressure bandages to stop the bleeding, treated the wounds, and administered a rabies vaccine. She was then transferred to the operating room for suturing and treatment of the injuries. The patient is currently under observation and treatment in the Interdisciplinary Department.
According to family members, at the time of the incident, the child was using the toilet when two pet dogs, who were fighting over food, suddenly attacked and bit the child on the head and face. Because the incident happened so quickly, the family didn't have time to intervene. Notably, because they thought the dogs were docile and wouldn't bite, the pets hadn't been vaccinated against rabies.
Doctors advise parents to absolutely never let young children play alone with dogs or cats, even if they are familiar family pets; and to keep children away from dogs while they are eating, sleeping, or agitated. Furthermore, pets should be fully vaccinated to reduce the risk of rabies transmission and prevent unfortunate accidents.
