Recently, the commissioning of the Hemodialysis Unit at the Con Dao Special Zone Medical Center has become a significant milestone, marking a remarkable development in healthcare in the island region.
This event is not only of great significance from a medical standpoint but also opens up new opportunities for chronic kidney disease patients to return to their hometowns for treatment.
End the tiring days away from home.
Previously, kidney failure patients in Con Dao who wanted to survive were forced to travel to the mainland for weekly dialysis treatments. As a result, many families faced numerous difficulties, including long-term rental accommodations and significant living and travel expenses.
Furthermore, patients also endure significant mental stress during long periods of living far away from their loved ones. The unit's operation contributes to realizing the goal of enabling people in coastal and island areas to access high-tech medical services in their living environment, thereby eliminating the need to be separated from their families for treatment.
Currently, thanks to comprehensive support from Thong Nhat Hospital, residents on the island can access high-quality dialysis services right in their local area. The unit is equipped with modern and standardized equipment. One of the most notable features is the water treatment system, designed to European standards with two-stage RO (reverse osmosis) filtration. This is a particularly important factor in ensuring absolute safety during dialysis treatment.
In addition, the unit is currently equipped with two Fresenius hemodialysis machines imported from Germany, combined with a system of high-quality consumables such as Nipro dialysis membranes, B. Braun dialysis fluid, and a full range of specialized medications in accordance with professional standards.
According to Dr. Le Cong Tho, Director of the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, with the two machines currently in operation, the unit is capable of serving a maximum of 12 patients undergoing dialysis. In the future, as the demand from the public increases, the Center will expand to a maximum of 10 machines, aiming to meet the treatment needs of approximately 60 patients.

The core element that creates peace of mind for patients is the direct professional and operational support from leading experts from Thong Nhat Hospital.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Bach - Head of the Nephrology and Dialysis Department at Thong Nhat Hospital, is directly responsible for professional matters, participating in every stage from establishing the system and developing operating procedures to training and transferring technology to the local medical team.
Towards the development of humane medical tourism.
To ensure stable and safe professional operations, Thong Nhat Hospital maintains a team of one doctor and one nurse who take turns working directly in Con Dao for an estimated six months. Simultaneously, the Con Dao Special Zone Medical Center proactively sends two teams to participate in an intensive training course on hemodialysis techniques directly at Thong Nhat Hospital.
It is expected that the technology transfer process will be completed in about 6 months, helping local doctors and medical staff gradually master the system completely.
Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Bach affirmed that the system is well-invested, has a strict operating procedure, and always involves continuous professional consultations, therefore patients can rest assured of long-term treatment right in Con Dao.
Since its opening (May 6th), the unit has successfully received and performed dialysis for 3 patients, with a total of 20 safe and effective dialysis sessions. In addition to serving local residents with chronic kidney disease requiring periodic dialysis, the unit also has the capacity to receive emergency cases of acute kidney failure and patients with chronic kidney disease who are undergoing delayed dialysis.
In particular, this is also a destination for tourists undergoing dialysis treatment who wish to travel to Con Dao for tourism, relaxation, and treatment. The development of this "medical tourism" model is considered a particularly humane approach. This model helps chronic patients have more opportunities to enjoy life and relax while ensuring the safe continuation of their treatment.
