One of the new certifications is LanguageCert. This certification has five exams, including Young Learners ESOL for students aged 7-12; ESOL for Schools for students aged 12-16; ESOL International for living abroad or for entrance/exit requirements at high schools, colleges, and universities; LanguageCert Test of English (LTE) to assess English proficiency in a professional work environment; LanguageCert Academic for studying abroad; and LanguageCert General for those immigrating or working in English-speaking countries.
The LanguageCert test allows candidates to flexibly choose which skill to test or to take all four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Notably, according to some studies, the LanguageCert Academic and General tests are concluded to have similar structure and difficulty levels to the IELTS Academic and General tests. Therefore, the results of the two tests can be converted to each other according to the corresponding benchmarks of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
This certificate is organized by Dai Truong Phat Education Group in collaboration with PeopleCert Qualifications (UK), starting from January 3rd.
The entry of LanguageCert into the English language testing field in Vietnam reflects an increasingly vibrant and competitive market, in the context of the country's desire to make English a second language in schools.
Besides LanguageCert, learners can also register for several other newly launched tests such as Duolingo English Test from the Duolingo platform, Oxford Test of English from Oxford University Press, etc. However, although it has been accepted by some Vietnamese universities for admissions purposes, Duolingo English Test is currently not licensed to be administered in Vietnam and is mainly conducted online at home.
Meanwhile, the Oxford Test of English, along with several other well-known international certificates such as Password English Language Testing, PSI, Trinity, and iTEP, are not yet recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training for testing in Vietnam, nor are any Vietnamese universities using them in their admissions processes.
On the other hand, another brand that has recently entered the English language testing market in Vietnam is Pearson Education Group (UK), which is currently collaborating with EMG Education to organize and issue PEIC (formerly PTE General) and PTE Academic certificates in our country after receiving permission from the Ministry of Education and Training in 2024.
In this context, long-established exams in Vietnam such as IELTS and TOEFL are also adapting to the changing landscape. Most recently, the British Council and IDP announced they will cease paper-based IELTS exams and switch entirely to computer-based testing from March 30th. Meanwhile, the TOEFL iBT exam offered by IIG Vietnam has reduced its duration to almost half of its original length, becoming the shortest four-skills exam currently available.
In addition to the above options, candidates can also consider the range of English certificates from the Cambridge University Examination Board and University Press, with some notable names such as Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers, A2 Flyers, B1 Preliminary, B2 First, C1 Advanced, Linguaskill... Alternatively, candidates can register for the Aptis ESOL exam from the British Council or the TOEIC exam from ETS. These are exams that have been accepted by some universities for admission and graduation purposes.
LanguageCert Exam Structure
According to the organizers, the total time for the LanguageCert Academic exam is 2 hours and 34 minutes. The listening section consists of 30 questions and takes 40 minutes, divided into four parts. The reading section has 30 multiple-choice questions and is also divided into four parts, taking 50 minutes. For the speaking section, candidates will have 14 minutes to complete four parts, such as reading a passage aloud and answering questions, or giving a presentation.
For the writing skills section, the exam consists of two parts with a time limit of 50 minutes. Part 1 requires candidates to write 150-200 words in the format of a letter, report, argumentative essay, or article using textual, visual, or informational input. Part 2 requires a 250-word essay in the format of an argumentative essay on a current academic topic.
The exam fee is currently 4,140,675 VND, and students can receive their results within 5 working days.
