The People's Committee of Lai Chau province has recently issued a document requesting the Department of Education and Training to implement a 5-day/week teaching and learning schedule for all schools. Accordingly, students will attend school from Monday to Friday, and have Saturdays and Sundays off for all levels of education.
Thus, after Lao Cai, Lai Chau is the second locality nationwide to allow all junior and senior high school students to have Saturday off.
Lao Cai province has been piloting a policy of giving junior high school students Saturdays off since 2019 and has finalized this policy for high school students since March of this year.
A week ago, the Department of Education and Training of Ha Tinh City, Ha Tinh Province, also piloted a program allowing junior high school students to have Saturdays off from regular classes during the 2024-2025 school year. This aims to reduce the workload for teachers and increase rest time for students.
Currently, 8 out of 9 secondary schools in Ha Tinh city are piloting the Saturday school holiday program.
In Nghe An province, many junior high schools in Vinh city and mountainous districts are piloting a Saturday school holiday program starting in 2023, based on the schools' facilities being able to accommodate a two-session-per-day school schedule.
In Hanoi, Saturday school closures are implemented in most private schools and high-quality secondary schools. In the public sector, only two schools have adopted this policy: Phan Huy Chu High School and Yen Hoa High School.
Since 2019, the Ministry of Education and Training has issued guidelines on teaching two sessions per day for junior and senior high schools.
Accordingly, if schools teach all day, they are not allowed to teach more than 4 lessons in the morning for lower secondary schools and more than 5 lessons for upper secondary schools. The maximum number of lessons in the afternoon is 3. The maximum number of lessons per week is 42 for lower secondary schools and 48 for upper secondary schools.
Schools have the autonomy to arrange a 5 or 6-day school week.
However, implementing a two-session-per-day, five-day-per-week schooling schedule involves requirements related to facilities, the number of classrooms, and the teaching staff.
