In early July, Rach Gia port was bustling with visitors from early morning. High-speed ferries to Phu Quoc , Nam Du, and Hon Son were fully booked. In Phu Quoc, popular attractions such as Grand World Phu Quoc, VinWonders Phu Quoc theme park, Phu Quoc Safari, Sunset Town, Kissing Bridge, Hon Thom cable car… were crowded with domestic tourists strolling, enjoying the cuisine, and watching the dazzling fireworks at night. Many families chose to combine their vacation with experiences such as snorkeling to see coral reefs, night squid fishing, SUP paddling, exploring Ham Ninh and Rach Vem fishing villages, or enjoying fresh seafood.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Hong, a resident of Hanoi, this is her third time returning to Phu Quoc, and the sea is still as beautiful as the first time, but with many new, more attractive and upscale experiences. “This summer, my family chose Phu Quoc for our vacation. We had almost a week to explore and experience this beautiful island. We enjoyed the local cuisine , watched the spectacular fireworks in the south of the island, visited small islands, and went snorkeling to see coral reefs,” Ms. Hong said.
Meanwhile, islands like Nam Du, Hon Son, and the Hai Tac archipelago still retain their appeal thanks to their pristine beauty, clear blue beaches, peaceful lifestyle, and reasonable costs. Not only the coastal and island areas, but the Thất Sơn region also attracts a large number of tourists. From early morning, convoys of vehicles line up heading to the Nui Sam National Tourist Area, conquering Mount Cam, exploring the Tra Su Melaleuca Forest, or visiting community tourism destinations. “The Bay Nui region has a cool climate, beautiful scenery, and unique cultural features of the Khmer and Cham people, creating a special attraction. After visiting Mount Sam and the Ba Chua Xu Temple, my family went to Ha Tien and then traveled to Phu Quoc. An Giang tourism offers a unique experience of mountains, forests, sea, and islands, so all members of my family enjoyed it,” shared Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phuc, a resident of Can Tho City.
According to many travel agencies, the number of domestic tourists in An Giang during the summer has increased significantly, especially families and groups of young people. However, amidst increasing competition from destinations nationwide, the challenge lies in how to encourage tourists to stay longer, spend more, and return. According to Mr. Ly Thua Loi, Deputy Director of a tourism company in Rach Gia ward, An Giang has many advantages to attract tourists, but apart from Phu Quoc, other destinations haven't seen many visitors. The reason is that these destinations lack unique products, especially nighttime experiences. “In the evening, besides eating and drinking, tourists want to participate in cultural activities, art performances, unique night markets, or community experiences. If each return offers something new, tourists won't get bored,” Mr. Loi said.
In reality, many tourists visiting Mount Sam only pay respects at the Lady of the Land Shrine, spend the day there, and then move on to other destinations. Meanwhile, the Bay Nui region has much potential for developing experiential products such as trekking, cycling, exploring traditional craft villages, enjoying local cuisine, staying in homestays, or cloud-hunting and sunrise-watching tours… to attract tourists to stay longer.
According to tourism experts, An Giang possesses abundant resources including sea, islands, mountains, forests, rivers, and diverse culture. If effectively connected, an attractive product chain lasting 3-5 days could be formed, linking the mainland with the sea and islands, offering a more immersive experience than simply stopping at a single destination. Renewing products and improving service quality is crucial, as many tourists believe that what they remember most after each trip is not only the beautiful scenery but also the service attitude, friendliness, and professionalism.
An Giang's destinations need to move towards a green tourism model, protecting coral reef ecosystems, reducing plastic waste, and developing experiential products linked to community culture, local cuisine, and especially building a brand to position the destination... When each destination has its own story to tell, its own unique products to experience, and is connected in an attractive travel chain, it will become a destination not only for the season but for the whole year. Each trip will leave a memorable story, and tourists will not only visit once but will return, bringing friends and family for subsequent summers.
