Also at this event, Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan pointed out two important roles of short films. First, short films are a place to discover, nurture and create a launching pad for cinematic talents. Many successful directors started with short films, such as Tran Anh Hung and Bui Thac Chuyen.
Second, short films help maintain professionalism in the filmmaking profession. When switching to feature films, many directors have to follow the market, using marketing techniques to attract audiences. Meanwhile, short films with limited duration always require high professional standards. To make an impression, the film must be unique and tell a story in a new way that no one has told before.
Producer and director Thu Trang also admitted that when making professional films, it requires a lot of calculation about the market and actors, making the initial innocence disappear. Currently, the short film making movement is developing strongly in Vietnam, attracting a large number of young people to participate.
This is an inevitable trend, especially when short films have more and more opportunities to reach audiences through online platforms. However, the number of professional playgrounds for short films is still very limited.
Some notable competitions in recent times include: CJ Short Film Project, Green Screen, 14-day Short Film, Storytellers... Previously, there were many prestigious competitions but now they have stopped being organized or have been interrupted such as: YxineFF; 48-hour Filmmaking; 3, 2, 1 Action... Most recently, in 2024, Ho Chi Minh City organized the Ho Chi Minh City Short Film Festival for the first time and is expected to maintain it annually.
In fact, many major awards and film festivals still have categories for short films. However, according to Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, this "placement" often makes short films inferior and less noticed than feature films. Therefore, creating a separate playground for short films not only meets the expectations of filmmakers but also adds confidence, helping them participate with a more proactive mindset.
In particular, if Vietnamese cinema can realize this by creating international playgrounds for short films, it will be a direction with great potential. Compared to the long film playground - where there are thousands of film festivals and fierce competition - short films still have many opportunities to break through and affirm their own values and identity.
