On September 5th, in Hanoi , the "Soldier's Heart" organization introduced the memoir "Battlefield and Homeland" by Major General Phan Văn Lai, Hero of the People's Armed Forces, vividly portraying the arduous resistance war against the US and the indomitable spirit of the people of Phú Vang (Thừa Thiên Huế ).

The 344-page book recounts the life and career of Major General Phan Van Lai with rich content: the patriotic traditions of his homeland and family; and the years of fighting alongside his comrades on the Tri Thien-Hue battlefield.

He vividly and authentically recreated all of this through the battles and heroic deeds of the security forces. He recounted the enemy's raids, how the people hid them in secret bunkers, and how they escaped the enemy's pursuit; the fierce battlefields after the Tet Offensive of 1968; and the unwavering, optimistic spirit and belief in the ultimate victory of the revolution.

Throughout the work, the prominent image highlights the exceptionally outstanding achievements of his comrades, such as Bay Khiem, Le Van Tri (later posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the State); Comrade Tao; Comrade Mao... and the people of Phu Vang.

The author of the memoir "The Battlefield and Homeland" was formerly the Deputy Director General of the General Department of Force Building, Ministry of Public Security , and former Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Public Security.

He was born on October 25, 1930, in Phuong Dinh commune, Truc Ninh district, Nam Dinh province (formerly), into a family with a tradition of patriotism. Now 95 years old and a Party member for 75 years, he still holds the important position of Head of the Liaison Committee of the Public Security Forces supporting the Southern battlefield during the resistance war against the US and for national liberation.

Even at his advanced age, he still harbors a deep concern about what he can do to preserve for a long time the examples of unwavering fighting spirit, indomitable courage, and heroic sacrifice of his comrades; at the same time, he expresses his boundless gratitude to his homeland, his comrades, and the people who have diligently nurtured, protected, sheltered, and supported him through all dangers during his years of service and combat on the smoke-filled, difficult, arduous, and fierce battlefield.

Major General Phan Van Lai shared: "I want to express my gratitude and remembrance through this book to the leaders of the Public Security sector who guided me; to remember and be grateful to my comrades, the steadfast mothers on the battlefield who loved, sheltered, and protected me during the fierce enemy raids."

He hopes this memoir will serve as a traditional patriotic educational resource for younger generations, inspiring them to always strive for excellence in their work and live up to the family and hometown traditions.

On this occasion, the Liaison Committee of Public Security officers who provided support to the Southern battlefield during the resistance war against the US, in coordination with the "Heart of a Soldier" organization, presented color portraits of officers and heroic martyrs of the People's Public Security to the Museum of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and the Vietnam Women's Museum.

Eight exemplary portraits were awarded on this occasion, including: Heroic Vietnamese Mother Le Thi My; Comrade To Quyen (1929-1996); and the heroic martyrs Nguyen Hoa Luong (1918-1952), Ta Van Sau (1928-1960), Tran Van Tho (1935-1961), Nguyen Van Uan (1948-1972), and Bui Xuan Quy (1954-1984).

At the ceremony, delegates recalled the exemplary contributions and sacrifices of the People's Public Security officers and martyrs who dedicated their efforts and shed their blood to protect the Fatherland during the nation's resistance wars.

Colonel and writer Dang Vuong Hung, the initiator of the restoration of color portraits, said: “Due to the highly confidential nature of the police force, collecting photos of police officers from various periods of resistance is very difficult. We will continue to try to select the most representative portraits so that the group of young artists can restore them in color and publicly present them; contributing to honoring those who have contributed to the country and keeping the tradition alive for the younger generation.”
