The weather in Ho Chi Minh City is cold, how to prevent respiratory infections?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên29/11/2023

In recent days, the weather in Ho Chi Minh City has been cold, many people going to work in the morning feel like Christmas is near.

Master Le Dinh Quyet, Head of Forecasting Department, Southern Hydrometeorological Station, said that in recent days, people in Ho Chi Minh City feel cold because the continental cold high pressure has a stable intensity, the equatorial low pressure trough with an axis crossing 4 - 7 degrees north latitude continues to maintain. At the same time, in the high altitude, the subtropical high pressure with an axis crossing the North Central region encroaches on the west and the northeast wind operates with medium to strong intensity over the southern sea areas.

According to the Southern Hydrometeorological Station, the above weather conditions will continue in the South for the next few days. Therefore, people can still feel the cold weather in the early morning.

Respiratory disease prevention

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, the results of Multiplex PCR testing by the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) of specimens collected from Ho Chi Minh City's children's hospitals showed that the Enterovirus and Human Rhinovirus families were dominant; followed by influenza and parainfluenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and bacteria (H. Influenza, Strep. pneumonia and Mycoplasma pneumonia), which are also common respiratory pathogens in children over the years.

Acute respiratory infection is the most common disease in children, progressing seasonally in our country and many countries in the world, often increasing in October-December every year.

Specialist Doctor 2 Nguyen Hoang Phong, Head of Respiratory Department 1, Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC), said that to prevent acute respiratory infections, parents need to clean their children's nose and throat with warm saline, clean their teeth and body regularly. Instruct children to wash their hands with soap to reduce the spread of microorganisms.

Ensure nutrition, increase breastfeeding for young children, supplement with lots of green vegetables and fruits for older children to provide enough vitamins. Get all vaccinations according to schedule.

Keep the indoor environment clean, airy and well-lit to kill microorganisms, clean toys and children's belongings. Wear a mask when going to public places and crowded places.

Specialist Doctor 2 Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital, said that at the end of the year, the cold weather creates conditions for bacteria and viruses to develop and attack young children, causing diseases such as sore throat, acute respiratory infections, etc. Therefore, to prevent disease, parents need to keep their children warm properly. Keeping warm does not mean dressing children in thick clothes, but paying attention to areas of the body that are susceptible to cold. When going out, young children need to cover the fontanel area and keep their feet warm. When changing diapers, dry the buttocks to avoid making the child cold.

The Department of Health recommends that everyone wash their hands regularly with soap and water for adults and children. Always cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. In addition to being fully vaccinated according to the expanded immunization schedule, it is recommended to get influenza and pneumococcal vaccines if eligible. Children with underlying medical conditions need to be monitored and treated to minimize the risk of severe respiratory infections.

Adults, especially pregnant women, the elderly and people with underlying medical conditions, need to get a flu vaccine every year. People with respiratory symptoms should wear masks and limit contact with people around them, especially the elderly, children, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions. Keep your body warm, maintain a balanced diet; proper nutrition according to age, especially taking advantage of breast milk in infants. Keeping your home clean and airy also helps prevent acute respiratory infections.
