Mr. Nguyen Van Hong's family in My Binh commune, Nga Nam town, cultivates 1 hectare of summer-autumn rice, using the OM18 variety. Mr. Hong said that the weather was favorable, with few pests and diseases, and the rice plants developed quite well. Although the rice was damaged by thunderstorms near harvest, the purchase price was 10-20% higher, so the family was very pleased.
“The price of fresh rice at the field is 600-1,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year. In addition, production costs this season have decreased by 1-2 million VND/ha, so after deducting expenses, the profit is over 30 million VND/ha, an increase of over 10 million VND compared to previous summer-autumn seasons,” Mr. Hong said.
Similarly, in this year's summer-autumn crop season, Mr. Le Van Banh in My Tu commune, My Tu district, also earned nearly 20 million VND in profit from 7,000 square meters of rice.
“Due to the impact of heavy rain, the rice harvest was delayed by 3 days, and some areas of rice were flattened, but the yield still reached over 7 tons/ha, an increase of 1 ton compared to the same period last year. Fresh rice sold at the field for 7,200 VND/kg. Compared to previous summer-autumn crops, this one was a huge success,” Mr. Banh said.
Similarly, at Tan Loc Thanh Cooperative in Nga Nam town, nearly 300 hectares have been harvested, with a yield of approximately 55 tons/ha. The price traders are paying for rice at the field is between 7,600 and 7,800 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, farmers are making a profit of 35 million VND/ha or more.
Mr. Tran Hung Cuong, Director of Tan Loc Thanh Cooperative, said that in the past summer-autumn rice crops, farmers only earned a profit of 15-20 million VND/ha. This year, however, the high price of rice, coupled with production in the model field, reduced costs, and an additional profit of about 15 million VND/ha, has made farmers very happy.
According to observations, current rice prices are showing a slight upward trend, increasing by 25-225 VND/kg. The price of regular rice ranges from 7,000-7,650 VND/kg, fragrant rice from 7,500-7,700 VND/kg, and specialty rice from 7,600-9,400 VND/kg. With current rice prices, rice farmers are seeing a 20-30% increase in profit compared to the same period last year.
According to the Economic Department of Nga Nam town (Soc Trang province), the rainy season has affected the harvesting process, with some rice fields being flattened and harvesting progressing slowly. Currently, nearly 2,000 out of 18,500 hectares of rice are still being harvested.
The relevant departments are coordinating with local authorities to intensify pumping at electric and diesel pumping stations; mobilizing people (in areas outside the dike system) to reinforce embankments to install drainage pumps; and deploying local combine harvesters to take advantage of the dry weather to harvest the rice.
According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Soc Trang province, the 2024 Summer-Autumn rice crop covered 140,436 hectares throughout the province, with approximately 31,843 hectares already harvested, concentrated in the districts of My Tu, Thanh Tri, Chau Thanh, Ke Sach, and Nga Nam town. The average yield is estimated at 54.8 tons/ha, with a total production of 174,500 tons.
