Harvesting rice in the rainy season, farmers' profits increased by 30%

Mr. Nguyen Van Hong's family in My Binh commune, Nga Nam town cultivates 1 hectare of summer-autumn rice, OM18 variety. Mr. Hong said that the weather was favorable, there were few pests and diseases, and the rice plants grew quite well. When the rice was about to be harvested, there was a thunderstorm and the rice fell over, but the purchase price was 10-20% higher, so the family was very excited.

“The price of fresh rice in the field is 600 - 1,000 VND/kg higher than the same period last year. In addition, the production cost of this crop has decreased by 1 - 2 million VND/ha, so after deducting costs, the profit is over 30 million VND/ha, an increase of over 10 million VND compared to previous Summer-Autumn crops,” said Mr. Hong.

Similarly, this summer-autumn crop, Mr. Le Van Banh in My Tu commune, My Tu district also had a profit of nearly 20 million VND from 7,000 square meters of rice.

“Due to the impact of heavy rain, the rice harvest was delayed by 3 days, a part of the rice area was overturned but the yield still reached over 7 tons/ha, an increase of 1 ton compared to the same period. Fresh rice is sold at 7,200 VND/kg. Compared to previous summer-autumn crops, this crop is a big success,” said Mr. Banh.

Similarly, at Tan Loc Thanh Cooperative, Nga Nam town, nearly 300 hectares have been harvested, with a yield of about 55 tons/hectare. The price of rice purchased by traders at the field is from 7,600 - 7,800 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, farmers have a profit of 35 million VND/hectare or more.

Mr. Tran Hung Cuong - Director of Tan Loc Thanh Cooperative said that in the past Summer-Autumn rice crops, farmers only earned a profit of 15 - 20 million VND/ha. This year, the high rice price combined with production in model fields, reduced costs, increased profits by about 15 million VND/ha, so farmers are very excited.

According to actual records, the current rice price is showing a slight increase from 25 - 225 VND/kg. Currently, the price of regular rice fluctuates from 7,000 - 7,650 VND/kg, the price of light fragrant rice is 7,500 - 7,700 VND/kg and the price of specialty rice is from 7,600 - 9,400 VND/kg. With the current rice price, rice farmers have increased profits by 20-30% compared to the same period.

According to the Economic Department of Nga Nam town (Soc Trang province), the rainy season has affected the harvest, some rice fields have fallen over, and the harvest progress is slow. Currently, nearly 2,000/18,500 hectares of rice are still being harvested.

The specialized sector is coordinating with local authorities to increase pumping at electric and oil pumping stations; mobilize people (in areas outside the dike) to reinforce the embankment to install drainage pumps, and mobilize harvesters on site to take advantage of the dry weather to harvest rice.

According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of Soc Trang province, in the 2024 Summer-Autumn rice crop, the whole province sowed 140,436 hectares, harvested about 31,843 hectares, concentrated in My Tu, Thanh Tri, Chau Thanh, Ke Sach districts, and Nga Nam town. The average yield is estimated at 54.8 tons/ha, with an output of 174,500 tons.
