NDO - On November 14, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a conference on irrigation science and technology 80 years of development and accompanying the country (1945-2025).
Climate change, exploitation of upstream water resources and internal economic development, natural disasters, and water pollution are increasingly serious and unpredictable across the country. These are huge challenges for water resources science and technology and disaster prevention and control.
It is expected that by the end of 2024, our country's rice output will reach 43 million tons, ensuring domestic food security and exporting more than 8 million tons of rice, with a forecast turnover of over 5 billion USD.

Therefore, the irrigation and disaster prevention and control sector needs new, modern technologies, along with digital transformation, to build a large, synchronous database for the sector, as a basis for improving forecasting, warning and decision-making capacity in disaster prevention and control, dam safety and serving the restructuring of the agricultural sector.
Director of the Vietnam Institute of Water Resources Tran Dinh Hoa said: “In the field of water resources management, there is technology to forecast and monitor drought and saltwater intrusion applied in the Mekong Delta and the Red River Delta to help provide accurate forecast data for highly effective production management; build scenarios and solutions to transform agricultural production and develop socio-economic development in accordance with developments in water resources, drought and saltwater intrusion in the Mekong Delta; solutions to regulate and allocate inter-regional and inter-river basin water resources in the Central Highlands and South Central Coast regions…”.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep said: “It is expected that by the end of 2024, our country's rice output will reach 43 million tons, ensuring domestic food security and exporting more than 8 million tons of rice, with a forecast turnover of over 5 billion USD. This achievement is the result of the comprehensive development of the irrigation system across the country. To date, Vietnam has built a diverse network of irrigation works, including tens of thousands of reservoirs, pumping stations, dams and culverts, along with a system of canals and dykes stretching hundreds of thousands of kilometers.”
Irrigation systems not only serve agriculture but also meet a variety of needs such as: domestic water supply, industry, urban water supply, disaster prevention, environmental protection, water transport support, power generation, tourism.
To promote science and technology in the field of irrigation, in the coming time, it is necessary to build mechanisms and policies to encourage innovation and attract talents. At the same time, promoting international cooperation to access advanced knowledge and technology; strengthening links between research institutes, universities and businesses to quickly apply research results into practice are important tasks that need to be carried out...
