Hanoi Pho

In August 2024, Hanoi pho was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. A bowl of Hanoi pho boasts a traditional flavor with a clear broth, subtly fragrant with cinnamon and star anise; thin, soft yet chewy rice noodles; and carefully selected beef or chicken. In the Old Quarter, many long-standing pho restaurants have become part of Hanoi's memories, such as Pho Bat Dan, Pho Ly Quoc Su, Pho Khoi (Hang Vai), Pho Vui (Hang Giay), Pho Ganh (Hang Chieu)... Some restaurants have even been honored with Michelin stars, further affirming Hanoi pho's position on the world culinary map.

La Vong fish cake

A unique and famous dish of Hanoi, recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in August 2025. Originating from Cha Ca Street, this dish, over 100 years old, is made from snakehead fish or catfish, marinated with turmeric and characteristic spices, then grilled until golden brown. When served, the fish is heated in a pan of oil with dill and scallions, creating a delightful sizzling sound and an enticing aroma. Diners eat Cha Ca La Vong with vermicelli noodles, roasted peanuts, herbs, and shrimp paste. The harmonious combination of ingredients and preparation makes Cha Ca La Vong a must-try dish when visiting Hanoi.

Hanoi Green Rice Flakes

Recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in March 2019, Me Tri green rice flakes have long been a symbol of Hanoi's autumn. Nowadays, visitors don't need to travel all the way to Me Tri village to enjoy them, as green rice flakes are readily available throughout the streets every autumn. Finding a small café in the Old Quarter, such as Nha Tho Street, Hang Phen Street, Ly Quoc Su Street, Ma May Street, Luong Ngoc Quyen Street, etc., and enjoying a packet of sticky rice with green rice flakes or a plate of sweet stir-fried green rice flakes will surely provide an unforgettable experience.

Pho, La Vong fish cakes, and sticky rice flakes are not only famous specialties of Hanoi but also cultural symbols, representing the memories and way of life of the capital's people.
