Billionaire Musk faces backlash for supporting far-right party in Germany

The German government and some politicians in Germany have reacted after US billionaire Elon Musk wrote on social network X that only the far-right AfD party can 'save Germany'.

"Only the AfD can save Germany," billionaire Musk wrote on social network X. This tweet sparked accusations on December 20 that he was trying to interfere in Germany's upcoming election, according to AFP.

Germans will go to the polls on February 23, 2025, after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition collapsed last month over budget disagreements.

Mr Musk has also criticised German CDU party leader Friedrich Merz, who is widely tipped to become Germany's next chancellor, for refusing to cooperate with the AfD.

The anti-immigration AfD has surged in the polls and is in second place, but other parties have ruled out a partnership with the AfD.

The AfD highlighted Mr Musk's praise in the party's message on X, saying that "millions of people have long recognised this, and the number is growing".

The German government did not want to comment on Musk's tweet, with spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann telling a press conference in Berlin that "freedom of expression also applies to X." However, Hoffmann added that the German government was concerned about "the way X has developed in recent years, especially since Elon Musk took over."

Meanwhile, several politicians from major German parties were outraged by Musk's tweet. "It is threatening, offensive and unacceptable for a key figure in the future US government to interfere in the German election campaign," Dennis Radtke, a CDU lawmaker, told the Handelsblatt newspaper.

Similarly, lawmaker Alex Schaefer, from Chancellor Scholz's SPD party, said Mr Musk's tweet about the AfD was "completely unacceptable".

Mr Musk has been chosen by US President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the informal body charged with reforming government bureaucracy.
