Billionaire Musk faces backlash for supporting far-right parties in Germany.

The German government and some politicians in Germany have reacted after American billionaire Elon Musk wrote on social media that only the far-right AfD party can 'save Germany'.

"Only the AfD can save Germany," billionaire Musk wrote on social media platform X. This tweet sparked accusations on December 20th that he was seeking to interfere in Germany's upcoming elections, according to AFP.

Germans will go to the polls on February 23, 2025, after Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition collapsed last month due to disagreements over the budget.

Musk also criticized German CDU leader Friedrich Merz, who is widely expected to become Germany's next chancellor, for refusing to cooperate with the AfD.

The AfD, the anti-immigration party, has seen a rise in the polls and is now in second place, but other parties have ruled out the possibility of cooperating with the AfD.

The AfD highlighted Musk's praise in its party message on X, stating that "millions have long recognized this, and that number is growing."

The German government declined to comment on billionaire Musk's tweet, with spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann stating at a Berlin press briefing that "freedom of speech also applies to X." However, Hoffmann added that the German government is concerned about "how X has developed in recent years, particularly since Elon Musk took over."

Meanwhile, some politicians from major parties in Germany were outraged by Musk's tweet. "That statement is threatening, offensive, and unacceptable, especially when a key figure in the future US government interferes in a German election campaign," Dennis Radtke, a CDU MP, told the Handelsblatt newspaper.

Similarly, lawmaker Alex Schaefer, from Chancellor Scholz's SPD party, said Musk's tweet about the AfD was "completely unacceptable."

Mr. Musk has been chosen by US President-elect Donald Trump to lead the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), an informal body responsible for reforming government bureaucracy.
