3 missing victims found in landslide at construction site in Lai Chau

According to information from Lai Chau Provincial Police, as of 9:30 a.m. this morning, May 17, authorities have found 3 out of 5 people missing in the serious landslide that occurred at the Ta Pao Ho 1A hydropower plant construction site, Si Lo Lau commune, Phong Tho district, Lai Chau province.

Search and rescue work is still being urgently deployed, although the weather at the scene is rainy, causing many difficulties for the participating forces.

Earlier, on the night of May 16, Colonel Nguyen Viet Giang, Director of Lai Chau Provincial Police, was present at the scene to direct the search and rescue.

Under the direct command of the Lai Chau Provincial Police Department, emergency forces approached the landslide area, cordoned off the search area and organized measures to respond to the risk of further landslides.

As reported by SGGP, the incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on May 16 at the construction site of the Ta Pao Ho 1A hydropower dam (in Lao Chai village, Si Lo Lau commune). As of the afternoon of the same day, it was confirmed that 5 people were missing and 4 others were injured.

The victims were workers under contract with Dung Phuc Loc Construction Investment Joint Stock Company (construction unit, headquartered in Nghe An ).

The injured were taken to Lai Chau Provincial General Hospital by medical staff of the Provincial Military Command and Economic - Defense Group 356 (Military Region 2).

Immediately after the incident, the Lai Chau Provincial Military Command mobilized forces, coordinated with local authorities to carry out rescue work, and at the same time increased propaganda and warned people to be on guard against the risk of new landslides.

The Ta Pao Ho 1A hydropower project is part of the Ta Pao Ho 1A and 1B hydropower cluster invested by Kosy Group, with a total capacity of 24MW and a total investment of VND911 billion. The project is located on the Ta Pao Ho stream basin, in the area of ​​Si Lo Lau and Mo Si San communes, about 90km from Lai Chau city center.

The Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) said that the preliminary cause of the landslide was determined to be due to the heavy rains that have been occurring in the area over the past few days. However, the exact cause is being investigated by the authorities.
