Through creative and flexible approaches, career guidance and student placement after graduating from lower secondary school have seen positive changes, helping students make informed choices about professions that match their abilities, strengths, and the labor market demands of each locality.
Diverse methods
For many years now, Tran Phu Secondary School (Ea Tan commune, Krong Nang district) has implemented effective career guidance and student placement after graduation. Based on academic results and quality assessment tests in the first and second semesters, the school has organized awareness and counseling sessions for parents and students to help them make informed choices upon graduation. Students with good academic performance and aspirations can apply to high schools, while some may choose to continue their education at the district's Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center or pursue vocational training. Mr. Nguyen The Thien, the school principal, stated: “The school also collaborates with vocational schools in the province to organize career guidance sessions for 9th-grade students. The teachers themselves visit and learn about vocational schools and training centers to help students and parents gain a realistic perspective and build confidence in their choices.” In the 2023-2024 school year, the 9th grade had 192 students, 35 of whom registered for vocational training.

Bang Adrênh Secondary School (Krông Ana district) organizes career counseling and guidance for students based on the actual situation through various forms such as: integrating it into classroom subjects and class activities; basing counseling and career guidance on student assessments through mock exams at the school and their academic achievements…
Last academic year, the school had 58 ninth-grade students, of whom 47 continued on to high school, while the rest enrolled in vocational schools and pursued vocational training locally. Ms. Nguyen Thi My Hoan, the school principal, stated: “In the coming years, the school will have more diverse approaches to career guidance and student placement. Specifically, in addition to teaching according to the Ministry of Education and Training 's curriculum, we will encourage students to research their preferred professions; introduce students to various career fields, describing the requirements, opportunities, and challenges of each; organize individual counseling sessions, invite experts in local fields and professions to speak, and allow students to experience those professions… In particular, we encourage parents to participate in these meetings to share information about career guidance and support their children in the career selection process.”
Mr. Ha Ngoc Anh, Director of the Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center of Buon Ma Thuot City, said that in recent times, the Center has actively coordinated with junior high schools in the area to effectively carry out career counseling, guidance, and enrollment. At the same time, vocational schools are now adding new, popular and in-demand fields of study such as cooking, auto repair, refrigeration, information technology, and fashion design… Therefore, the number of students enrolling in combined general education and vocational training programs at the school has increased year by year. In the 2023-2024 school year, the Center enrolled 130 students in grade 10, achieving 100% of its enrollment plan.

Choosing the right learning environment
Promoting career guidance helps many students choose a learning environment that suits them and their families. During the 2020-2021 school year's enrollment season, Lang Thi Bich Hiep (of the Thai ethnic group) from Ia R've commune, Ea Sup district, was accepted into a public high school in the area, but she chose not to attend and instead opted to study at the District Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center. According to Hiep, through the advice of teachers and research from previous students, the Ea Sup District Vocational Education and Continuing Education Center met her needs and family circumstances. Specifically, the Center has dormitories for students from distant areas (Hiep's home is 50 km away from the Center); students receive additional financial support for their academic studies; Receiving a monthly allowance of 1.49 million VND... "This valuable support has helped me continue my studies. Throughout my three years at the Center, I focused on my studies, and this year I was accepted into the Chinese Language program at Dong A University, Dak Lak Branch. I am currently completing the necessary procedures to continue my studies," Bich Hiep shared.
Similarly, Le Thi Tra My (Tran Phu Secondary School, Ea Tan commune, Krong Nang district), who just graduated from secondary school this year, has chosen to study marketing. She confided that she felt her academic abilities were not suitable for high school, so she decided to pursue vocational training, partly because she loves the profession and received thorough advice before making her choice. She will officially enroll at the end of August. Meanwhile, Ms. Le Thi Nghia, parent of Nguyen Thai Le Duong (Dlie Ya commune, Krong Nang district), expressed: “Right from the school year, the school (Ama Trang Long Secondary School) organized career guidance sessions, introducing various professions… After considering our family circumstances and our child's interests, we registered her to study automotive technology after graduating from secondary school.”
