The PlayStation 6 (PS6) may not launch as soon as previously predicted. Several industry reports suggest Sony is reconsidering the release schedule for its next-generation console, amid rising component costs, particularly memory. Instead of the 2027 date mentioned in some earlier reports, the possibility of the PS6 being delayed to 2028 or even 2029 is being discussed by supply chain analysts.
The biggest factor explaining the delays lies in memory prices. The DRAM and high-bandwidth memory market is seeing a surge in demand, primarily from data centers in the AI sector. This creates a ripple effect, causing hardware component prices for many consumer products to fluctuate.
Some rumors suggest the PS6 might be equipped with around 30 GB of high-speed memory. If this information is accurate, even a slight increase in memory prices could significantly impact overall production costs. Analysts have noted a clear upward trend in prices towards the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, although the long-term viability of this increase is still uncertain.
For Sony, the challenge lies in its pricing strategy. The Japanese tech giant typically prices its consoles very competitively at the beginning of each generation, accepting lower profit margins to attract users, and then compensating with revenue from software and services.
However, if memory costs remain high, Sony will have to choose between reducing profit margins or significantly increasing retail prices. A gaming console priced close to $1,000 would clearly be difficult to reach the mass market.
Meanwhile, Sony isn't under too much pressure to launch the next generation immediately. The PlayStation 5 has sold over 75 million units and still maintains a high level of usage. The PS5 Pro's release at the end of 2024 will also help refresh the ecosystem, giving Sony more room to extend the current product lifecycle.
However, the semiconductor market is highly volatile. If supply improves or component prices stabilize, the PS6 launch plan could completely change. Currently, however, rising memory costs and the continued strong reception of the PS5 make a delayed PlayStation 6 launch a plausible scenario.
