Positive signs for second quarter business season

The second quarter 2025 financial reporting season has begun with a series of positive signals from listed companies. However, exchange rate risks and many fluctuations from external factors can bring gray tones to the profit picture.

Positive numbers

The new earnings season is about to kick off, with the peak in the second half of July 2025. However, many large companies have already provided preliminary estimates.

With an estimated profit after tax for the first 6 months of 2025 reaching VND 1,013 billion, Dabaco Vietnam Group (DBC) has completed its profit target for the whole year. This is the preliminary figure reported by Dabaco's leaders at the regular meeting of the Board of Directors to evaluate the business results of the second quarter of 2025, deploy tasks for the third quarter of 2025 and the last months of the year. Specifically, revenue for the first 6 months reached VND 12,537 billion, an increase of 7.3% over the same period in 2024; expected profit exceeded the plan by 1%, 4.6 times higher than the same period in 2024.

Another agricultural enterprise, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Joint Stock Company, also disclosed its production and business results for the first 6 months of 2025. Accordingly, the Company recorded a profit of more than 60% of the 2025 plan approved by shareholders in early June (VND 1,114 billion), corresponding to a growth rate of over 30% over the same period.

Although revenue from durian has not been recorded, Hoang Anh Gia Lai 's business activities have benefited from the high price of bananas since the beginning of the year. This is also the basis for the Company to seek shareholders' opinions to adjust its profit plan. In a letter to shareholders from Chairman of the Board of Directors Doan Nguyen Duc, the target profit after tax in 2025 is expected to increase by nearly 35%, to VND1,500 billion.

For shrimp exporters like Sao Ta Food Joint Stock Company (Fimex), growth did not come so much from selling prices but from soaring output due to increased export orders to the US during the 90-day reciprocal tax deferral. The output of finished shrimp products reached 11,452 tons, up 37% over the same period. Meanwhile, the output of finished agricultural products, an item that contributes a smaller proportion to the revenue structure, reached 481 tons, down 23% compared to the first half of 2024.

It is estimated that in the first half of 2025, Fimex recorded sales of 135.6 million USD, an increase of 43% over the same period. In addition to revenue growth, according to the company's leaders, consolidated profit for the first 6 months reached nearly 170 billion VND, or even higher, mainly due to the fact that exports to the US had to set aside nearly 8% of sales to cover the developments of two anti-dumping (AD) and anti-subsidy (CVD) lawsuits.

Benefiting from the policy of focusing on public investment disbursement, construction and installation enterprises also have positive signs in business. The business results of Deo Ca Transport Infrastructure Investment Joint Stock Company (HHV) grew by double digits. Revenue is estimated at 1,700 billion VND, up 13% over the same period, while after-tax profit is estimated at 323 billion VND, up 32% over the same period.

Still uncertain

According to data from the General Statistics Office ( Ministry of Finance ), GDP in the second quarter of 2025 grew positively, with an estimated growth rate of 7.96% over the same period last year. All three sectors of agriculture, forestry and fishery; industry and construction; and services grew, led by industry and construction.

Import and export in the first 6 months of 2025 increased by 16.1%, with a trade surplus of 7.63 billion USD. In particular, in the second quarter of 2025 alone, export turnover increased by 18% over the same period last year and increased by 13.6% over the first quarter of 2025.

Some banks also had early preliminary business results, recording a fairly positive picture thanks to high credit growth and reduced provisioning pressure when bad debts were well controlled. The latest update from the General Statistics Office (Ministry of Finance), as of June 26, 2025, total means of payment increased by 7.09% compared to the end of 2024, much higher than the 2.48% increase in the same period last year. Credit growth of the economy reached 8.30% (the same period last year reached 4.85%). Capital mobilization of credit institutions increased by 6.11%, much higher than the increase in the same period last year (1.82%).

Exchange rate movements in recent months have also partly supported export activities thanks to the more competitive prices of Vietnamese goods. As of June 30, 2025, the VND/USD selling rate at Vietcombank climbed to VND26,300/USD, up 2.93% compared to the beginning of the year. In the second quarter alone, the exchange rate increased by 2.17%, while in the same period last year it was more than 2%.

Fluctuating exchange rates of many foreign currencies make the cost of importing raw materials and foreign currency borrowing more risky not only for businesses borrowing in USD, but also in euros and Japanese yen. According to estimates from the Analysis Department of SSI Securities Corporation, in the first 6 months of the year, the consolidated revenue of the whole market of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) was estimated at VND11,700 billion, up 5% over the same period last year, but pre-tax profit decreased by 23% to VND5,851 billion. The main reason came from the exchange rate loss estimated at VND1,000 billion, in contrast to the profit of VND545 billion in the same period last year, due to the impact of the Japanese yen appreciating against the domestic currency.

Although the second quarter 2025 business reporting season started with bright colors from many businesses, the expected business results picture still has other colors, when significant challenges from external factors are "testing" the mettle of businesses.
