Exports accelerate
According to the Department of Industry and Trade's report, from January 1st to February 28th, 2026, the total import and export turnover of goods through the province's border gates is estimated at 98.15 million USD, an increase of 0.95% compared to the same period last year, reaching 11.68% of the assigned plan. Notably, the total export value is estimated at over 73 million USD, an increase of 14.68% compared to the same period last year, reaching 12.38% of the annual plan. The diverse structure of export goods, ranging from processed minerals such as antimony to agricultural products (including durian, green tea, dried black tea, coffee beans, cassava starch, dried chili peppers, lotus seeds, jackfruit, lychee, green bananas), along with many processed industrial products (including industrial plywood, aluminum alloy ingots, PP plastic packaging, telephone headsets, etc.), shows the wide-open market demand, the increasing attractiveness of export goods through the province's border gates, and the shift towards increasing the proportion of deeply processed products, reflecting the efforts of businesses in the province to enhance added value.
Observations at Thanh Thuy International Border Gate before, during, and after the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Horse (2016) show that hundreds of containers of goods were cleared for import and export, signaling a vibrant year of activity at the border gate. According to Ms. Nguyen Bich Thuy, Deputy Team Leader of the Thanh Thuy International Border Gate Customs Team: In the first two months of the year, the team processed nearly 1,000 import and export declarations for hundreds of vehicles. The total import and export turnover reached approximately 46 million USD (an increase of about 4% compared to the same period last year), with main items including: agricultural products, flowers, fresh fruits, antimony metal, electricity, etc. Cross-border trade activities maintained a stable pace from the early months of the year.
Exports accelerated right from the beginning of the year, helping to offset the decline in imports (down 25.13% compared to the same period last year), and at the same time helping to shift the trade balance towards a surplus, contributing to stabilizing the province's production.
Towards sustainable growth
In 2025, the province's import-export turnover is projected to reach over US$1.13 billion, a 104.4% increase compared to 2024 and exceeding the target by 146.9%. Exports are expected to reach over US$918 million, a 144.5% increase. Surpassing the US$1.1 billion mark in 2025 and maintaining the growth momentum of import-export in the first two months of 2026 are positive signs for the province to continue achieving its import-export targets and contributing to its economic growth. However, the context of international conflicts and the global economy still presents many potential risks; increasingly stringent technical, environmental, and traceability standards; and high logistics costs and inter-regional connectivity infrastructure remain direct factors impacting the competitiveness of local goods.
Therefore, according to the Department of Industry and Trade, in order to maintain and improve the quality of growth, the province will continue to support businesses in expanding and diversifying export markets; effectively utilize free trade agreements; encourage investment in technological innovation, promote deep processing and build brands for key products.
Furthermore, continuing administrative procedure reforms, promoting digital transformation in the trade and customs sectors, developing logistics infrastructure and warehousing, and strengthening regional linkages will contribute to reducing costs and enhancing the competitiveness of businesses. In particular, proactively grasping market information, forecasting supply and demand, and providing early warning of risks will help businesses mitigate adverse impacts from external fluctuations.
The first two months of the year were just the beginning, but the positive growth figures have shown the flexibility and proactiveness of the business community and the effective management of all levels and sectors. With the view of continuing to promote the spirit of innovation, putting people and businesses at the center of service, and creating the best possible conditions for the private sector, import and export activities can be expected to have a year of solid growth, making a practical contribution to the province's socio-economic development goals.
