Chu Dau pottery in Thai Tan commune ( Hai Phong ) is a high-class pottery line dating back to the 13th-14th centuries, flourishing in the 15th-16th centuries. However, in the 17th century, this ancient pottery line was lost. After a long journey of excavation, searching, and research, Chu Dau pottery is gradually being revived. Compared to other types of pottery, Chu Dau pottery stands out for its quality: "Thin as paper, transparent as jade, white as ivory, resonant like a bell." The pottery is made from white clay, and the glaze, made from the ash of glutinous rice husks, gives it a unique beauty. The Chu Dau pottery making method reached a very high level of sophistication. The motifs and patterns on the pottery are particularly noteworthy, with both the incised and raised designs being elaborate and meticulous. The motifs painted on the pottery vividly reflect life in the Northern Delta region with delicate yet free and unrestrained brushstrokes. The artisans of Chu Dau pottery may only be amateur painters, but they still manage to capture the essence of this ancient pottery tradition through each brushstroke. This reflects the respect for traditional values of the younger generation, who are always striving to preserve and develop the craft. To enhance its value, Chu Dau pottery is also decorated with gold leaf. Foreign tourists enjoy the experience of making Chu Dau pottery. Recently, five Chu Dau pottery products were recognized as national-level 5-star OCOP products. This is a positive development for Chu Dau pottery, helping it to affirm its brand and continue promoting its enduring cultural and historical values.THANH CHUNG - NGUYEN MO
