General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping paid a state visit to Vietnam from April 14-15, at the invitation of General Secretary To Lam and President Luong Cuong.

The state visit to Vietnam is also the first overseas trip of General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping in 2025. During General Secretary and President Xi Jinping's visit to Vietnam, the two sides are expected to hold many important activities and sign numerous cooperation agreements in a range of fields.
Over the past period, overall Vietnam-China relations have maintained a positive development trend and achieved many important results. From the beginning of 2025 until now, in the context of commemorating the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China (January 18, 1950 - January 18, 2025), the two sides have maintained close exchanges and contacts at high levels and other levels. General Secretary To Lam held a telephone conversation with General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping (January 15), announcing the launch of the Vietnam-China People's Cultural Exchange Year 2025.
Key Vietnamese leaders and their Chinese counterparts exchanged congratulatory letters/messages on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (January 18). General Secretary To Lam attended the program "Meeting with Vietnamese and Chinese students from different periods" (March 20).
In terms of trade, in 2024, Vietnam maintained its position as the largest trading partner in ASEAN and the fourth largest trading partner of China in terms of country criteria (after the US, Japan, and South Korea). Bilateral trade turnover between Vietnam and China for the whole year of 2024 reached US$205.2 billion (an increase of 19.3%). In the first three months of 2025, bilateral trade turnover between Vietnam and China reached US$51.25 billion (an increase of 17.46% compared to the same period).
Regarding investment, in 2024, China ranked first in the number of newly approved projects with 955 projects, and third out of 110 investment partners in Vietnam in terms of capital with US$4.73 billion (an increase of over 3.05%). As of December 31, 2024, China continued to rank sixth out of 148 countries and territories investing FDI in Vietnam with 5,111 active projects, totaling US$30.83 billion in registered capital, accounting for over 6.2% of total registered foreign direct investment in Vietnam. Chinese investors have invested in 19 out of 21 FDI-intensive economic sectors and in 55 out of 63 provinces and cities in Vietnam. In March 2025, China ranked second in total registered capital, reaching US$1.23 billion, accounting for 28.5%, second only to Singapore.
