The US President signed an executive order requiring businesses to share their AI models with the government.

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order requiring AI companies to voluntarily provide their models to the federal government for evaluation before bringing them to market. This move indicates that the US government is tightening its oversight of advanced AI models.

The order requires companies to voluntarily participate in a standardized evaluation process to assess the "enhanced cybersecurity capabilities" of their model, as well as to determine whether the model should be considered a "pioneering model within the scope of regulation."

The order then requires companies to allow the government access to these models up to 30 days before the planned public release, and allows the government to assist in selecting “trusted partners” who will have early access to those models.

Next, the order requires access to these models up to 30 days before the companies plan to release them more widely, and empowers the government to participate in selecting "trusted partners" who will be granted early access.

The decree states that “nothing in this section shall be construed as permitting the establishment of mandatory government requirements for licensing, pre-approval or authorization of the development, publication, release or distribution of new AI models, including advanced models.”

The June 2 executive order, which offered few specific details, was issued at a pivotal moment for AI development in the United States. President Trump signed the order just weeks after postponing a signing ceremony attended by many prominent tech executives because he “didn’t like some aspects of it,” as he told reporters at the time.

Trump's AI executive order sets out several timelines for developing new directives and guidance, and requires the U.S. Department of Defense to prioritize cybersecurity for its information systems.
