On December 30, South Korean police announced that an inter-agency investigation team was requesting a search warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol, as well as an arrest warrant for the leader.

According to Yonhap News Agency, citing information from a group comprising the Office of Investigation into Corruption of Senior Officials (CIO), police, and the Ministry of Defense 's investigative unit, the request was submitted to the Seoul West District Court at midnight on December 29.
Investigators allege President Yoon Suk Yeol spearheaded the rebellion and abused his power by declaring martial law on December 3rd and ordering the deployment of troops to the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from voting against the decree.
The South Korean leader denied the allegations, asserting that his declaration of martial law was a "governing act" aimed at warning the opposition party against what he called "abuse of legislative power."
President Yoon Suk Yeol's legal team subsequently filed an objection to the arrest warrant in court, arguing that the order should be rejected because the CIO lacked the authority to investigate allegations of rebellion.
According to lawyer Yun Gap Geun, Yoon Suk Yeol's legal representative, the CIO's ability to investigate sedition simply because they have the authority to investigate abuse of power is completely legally incorrect.
President Yoon Suk Yeol's imposition of martial law plunged South Korea into its biggest political crisis in decades. This crisis worsened after his successor, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, was impeached by the National Assembly for failing to sign bills investigating the South Korean president.
Following the impeachment of Han Duck-soo, Vice Prime Minister and Finance Minister Choi Sang Mok became Acting President and Acting Prime Minister of South Korea.
