Leicester have agreed to sell midfielder James Maddison to Tottenham for a lower price than their initial asking price of $76 million.

The two teams reached an agreement today, June 28th, and the England midfielder will undergo a medical at Tottenham later today. Tottenham will guarantee a transfer fee of $51 million, with other details such as the payment schedule and performance-based bonuses to be agreed upon when the official contract is signed.

Maddison is expected to earn $216,000 a week at Tottenham, and he has also agreed personal terms with his new club. The 27-year-old midfielder is eager to play in the Premier League after Leicester's relegation. He has just returned to England after a short holiday on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

Initially, Leicester demanded $76 million, even though Maddison only had one year left on his contract. Newcastle also tried to compete with Tottenham, but Maddison wasn't a top priority for them after signing Sandro Tonali from Milan. Needing funds to rebuild their Championship team, Leicester relented and reduced Maddison's asking price to Tottenham. They could receive an additional six million dollars depending on the England international's performance at Tottenham.

Maddison will be Tottenham's second signing under new manager Ange Postecoglou, following goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli for a transfer fee of $21 million. In addition, Tottenham also permanently signed midfielder Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski after a season on loan.

Maddison was born in Coventry and rose through the ranks of their youth academy before moving to Norwich in 2016. He was Norwich's best player, leading Leicester to sign him in June 2018 for $25 million. Maddison scored 55 goals in 203 appearances for Leicester, making him the team's best player in the 2021-2022 season. At Tottenham, he is likely to replace Lucas Moura, who recently left after his contract expired.

Before Maddison joined Tottenham, he received advice from legendary player Alan Shearer: "Make sure Tottenham keep Harry Kane first."
