Accordingly, the results of the water resource inventory in the city are compiled based on inheriting, reviewing, and updating data from three areas before the administrative unit reorganization, including Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, in order to serve the management, exploitation, use, and protection of water resources in accordance with the provisions of the 2023 Water Resources Law and the National Water Resources Inventory Project.
According to the inventory results, Ho Chi Minh City currently has 4,285 surface water sources, including: 4,192 rivers, streams, canals, and ditches within the province and 93 lakes and ponds; there are 277 water exploitation and utilization facilities and 3,664 wastewater discharge facilities into water sources. The inventory results are an important basis for building a water resource database, strengthening the management and monitoring of water exploitation and utilization activities and controlling wastewater discharge, contributing to ensuring water security and serving the sustainable socio -economic development of the city.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Agriculture and Environment is tasked with publishing the results of the water resource inventory in the city; updating the inventory results into the water resource inventory management and data exploitation software provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ; reporting the results of the water resource inventory in the city to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment; presiding over, reviewing, and submitting to the City People's Committee for decision on adjustments when changes occur; and periodically updating the water resource inventory results as prescribed.
Departments, agencies, and People's Committees of communes, wards, and special zones are responsible for publicly disclosing the results of the water resource inventory in the city; at the same time, departments, agencies, and localities shall coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Agriculture and Environment to closely manage the current state of water resources in the area; control water exploitation and use activities, and closely monitor wastewater discharge into water sources in the area according to regulations.
