Due to the prolonged and widespread heatwave in Hanoi, and the resulting surge in electricity demand, the Hanoi Electricity Corporation (EVNHANOI) has decided to postpone all planned power outages until June 1st, 2026, in order to ensure a stable electricity supply for people's daily lives, business activities, and important examinations in the city.
According to Hanoi's power system, the city's peak power (Pmax) reached 6,290 MW at 9:30 PM on May 26, 2026 – the highest level ever recorded, an increase of nearly 5% compared to the peak power in 2025 (5,992 MW). Electricity consumption on May 26 also reached 131.76 million kWh, a 7.3% increase compared to the previous year's peak. These indicators show that electricity demand in the capital is increasing sharply due to the impact of the intense hot weather.
To ensure the safe, continuous, and stable operation of the power system, EVNHANOI will temporarily suspend all previously planned power outages until 24:00 on June 1, 2026. During this period, power outages will only be implemented in cases of force majeure to address risks that directly affect the safe operation of the power system.
EVNHANOI is also strengthening its inspection and monitoring of the power grid system's operation, proactively reviewing critical equipment, and deploying on-call personnel to promptly handle any arising situations, especially at locations serving the 10th grade entrance exam and the 2026 high school graduation exam.
In addition to technical solutions, EVNHANOI recommends that customers use electricity safely, economically, and efficiently, especially during peak hours from 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM (Monday to Saturday). Setting air conditioners to 26 degrees Celsius or higher, combining the use of fans, and limiting the simultaneous use of multiple high-power electrical appliances will help reduce pressure on the power system during the summer.
On the night of May 26th and the early morning of May 27th, some areas in Hanoi still experienced power outages. Ms. Hoai Thuong, from Me Tri Thuong alley, said that a sudden power outage in the middle of the night forced her family to take their children to a relative's house to escape the heat. Some families who lost power in the middle of the night had to go to parks or find guesthouses in areas with electricity to take shelter.
Earlier, on the afternoon of May 26th, Nhat Tao 4 residential area, Dong Ngac ward, also experienced a power outage from 3:15 PM due to line overload. On May 25th, Mr. Tran Viet Anh, from Vinh Hung ward, reported that his family experienced a power outage for about 20 minutes in the evening.
According to EVNHANOI, this was not a rolling power outage but simply an overload incident. The unit promptly dispatched technical staff to handle the situation, minimizing the impact on residents and businesses.
