This move marks a strategic shift for the tech giant to diversify its revenue streams and reduce its long-standing reliance on advertising revenue. Immediately after the announcement, Meta's stock rose nearly 3%.
In a video announcement on Instagram, Meta's Chief Product Officer, Naomi Gleit, stated that the company is launching three service packages: Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus.
Accordingly, the fee for Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus is $3.99 per month. Users who subscribe to this plan will be provided with advanced features, including in-depth data analysis tools, statistics on the number of people who re-viewed Stories, expanded audience reach, and profile personalization options.
Meanwhile, the WhatsApp Plus plan, priced at $2.99 per month, focuses primarily on personalization features such as premium stickers, custom ringtones, and app theme options.
The decision to expand the fee model comes as Meta faces intense scrutiny from investors regarding its massive spending on artificial intelligence (AI). The company anticipates total capital investment this year to range from $125-145 billion, largely poured into building AI data centers.
Sharing her vision for the future, Ms. Gleit revealed that Meta is developing additional paid packages specifically for businesses, content creators, and AI products. The corporation plans to gradually consolidate these diverse services under a single brand called "Meta One".
Previously, in 2023, Meta had to launch ad-free paid versions of Facebook and Instagram in the European market. However, this was a temporary solution to comply with the strict data protection laws of the European Union (EU), allowing users there to choose between using the free (ad-based) version or paying to remove ads.
