On May 27th, Meta Technologies officially announced paid subscription packages for its flagship applications, marking a major step toward reducing its reliance on traditional advertising revenue.
The information was announced by Naomi Gleit, Meta's Chief Product Officer, in a video posted on Instagram. According to her, the new services, including Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus, will be rolled out globally, and Meta is also developing additional subscription packages for businesses, content creators, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) products. Ms. Gleit also stated that Meta plans to consolidate its paid services under a single brand called Meta One in the future.
According to several sources, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus packages will cost $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus will be listed at $2.99 per month. Meta states that the Plus packages on Facebook and Instagram will unlock more advanced features such as more detailed data analysis; story view statistics; increased user reach; and profile customization.
Meanwhile, WhatsApp Plus focuses on personalizing the experience with features such as premium stickers, custom ringtones, and a unique app interface.
This move comes as Meta is facing pressure from investors regarding its massive spending on Artificial Intelligence. The company forecasts total capital spending this year, primarily for AI data centers, will range from $125 billion to $145 billion.
Following this news, Meta's stock rose nearly 3%.
Previously, in 2023, Meta launched ad-free, paid versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe to comply with European Union (EU) data protection regulations.
This model allows users to choose between a free version with ads and a paid version without ads.
