The Bau Truc Cham pottery village in Ninh Phuoc commune (Khanh Hoa province) has become more bustling than ever. From early morning, groups of tourists continuously flock to the village. The experience area is packed with people, the sounds of Paranung drums and Saranai horns echoing loudly amidst the space rich in Cham cultural identity.

The product display stalls were always crowded with visitors and shoppers. The lively atmosphere extended from the pottery-making area and the cultural performance stage to the outdoor pottery firing area.

What fascinates many tourists is that Cham pottery making does not use a potter's wheel. Instead, artisans use their hands to shape the clay while walking backward around the pottery block to create the finished product. Tourists watch intently, using their phones to record the artisans' graceful and skillful movements.

After listening to the instructions, many tourists enjoyed experiencing the ancient crafts of the Cham people.

Besides the pottery-making area, the Cham pottery product display areas attract particular attention from visitors. At the Bau Truc Cham pottery exhibition area, covered in the characteristic reddish-brown color of handcrafted pottery, thousands of products are arranged along the walkways, creating a space rich in Cham culture.

According to the artisans, it is the open-air firing technique that creates the unique color of each product. Because they are made entirely by hand, no two products are alike. Each vase, jar, or ceramic statue is a one-of-a-kind item.

In addition, visitors can immerse themselves in Cham culture with traditional dances, folk instrument performances, and interactions with local artisans. The sound of drums, music, and graceful dances makes the atmosphere of the craft village even more vibrant during the summer tourist season.

According to Mr. Phu Huu Minh Thuan, Director of the Bau Truc Cham Pottery Cooperative, the number of visitors has increased significantly this year. Currently, the village receives an average of 1,500-2,000 visitors per day.

To cater to tourists, the cooperative has enhanced its programs to offer Cham cultural experiences, such as performances of Cham musical instruments, introductions to Cham history and culture, pottery-making workshops, and opportunities to interact with artisans.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern life, the Bau Truc Cham pottery village still preserves traditional values that have existed for generations, offering visitors a unique cultural experience.

At the end of 2022, "Cham pottery art" was inscribed by UNESCO on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguard. This international recognition contributes to elevating the brand of Bau Truc Cham pottery and opens up opportunities for the ancient craft village to continue preserving, passing on the craft, and developing sustainable community tourism.
