Tram Tau District has a total forest area of 45,853.84 hectares, of which natural forest accounts for 35,476.49 hectares and planted forest for 10,465.13 hectares. It is also one of the key areas for forest fires in Yen Bai province, having suffered considerable damage. In 2024 alone, the district recorded approximately 5 forest fires, causing damage to 13.4 hectares of various types of forest. These figures not only raise an alarm but also encourage local authorities and residents to further strengthen forest fire prevention and control efforts.
Right from the beginning of the dry season, the Van Chan - Tram Tau - Nghia Lo Forest Management Unit proactively advised the District People's Committee to issue decisive directives and organized numerous conferences to disseminate the spirit and assign specific tasks to each level and sector. One of the key solutions to improve the effectiveness of forest fire prevention and control in Tram Tau is to strengthen propaganda, mobilization, and raise public awareness.
The Forest Protection Department has closely coordinated with the Protective Forest Management Board and the People's Committees of the communes to review and compile statistics on cultivated land plots at risk of fire spreading into the forest. The creation of a map for managing cultivated land is considered a powerful tool for monitoring and controlling the production activities of the people, thereby proactively preventing forest fires. To date, 930 cultivated land plots belonging to 634 households have been reviewed, and these households have signed commitments to strictly adhere to safe burning practices. This demonstrates the positive response of the community in forest fire prevention and control.
Mr. Nguyen Van Quynh, Deputy Head of the Van Chan - Tram Tau - Nghia Lo Forest Ranger Station, shared: "Reviewing and encouraging people to sign commitments on safe burning of fields is an important measure to minimize the risk of fire spreading into the forest. We have closely coordinated with the commune authorities to effectively implement this work, ensuring that people understand their responsibilities in protecting the forest."
To maximize the effectiveness of forest fire prevention and control, Tram Tau district has leveraged the "four on-the-spot" principle (on-the-spot command, on-the-spot forces, on-the-spot equipment, on-the-spot logistics) at the grassroots level. The district has strengthened the forest fire prevention and control command system at the commune level and the Protective Forest Management Board, establishing 12 mobile forest protection and fire prevention and control teams with 266 members and 55 forest protection and fire prevention and control teams in villages and hamlets with 673 people.
Communes and towns have also established duty rosters for forest fire prevention and control, publicly disclosing the contact phone numbers of each member to ensure timely guidance in case of emergencies. Propaganda, mobilization, and commitment signing have also been widely implemented within the community. Communes have organized village meetings to disseminate information and encourage people to actively participate in forest protection and fire prevention and control. The results show that 55 out of 57 villages have implemented this, with 6,395 households participating and signing commitments. Information and reporting systems are seamlessly implemented from villages to communes and the District Steering Committee, ensuring that information is transmitted quickly and accurately.
Despite achieving encouraging results, forest fire prevention and control in Tram Tau still faces many challenges. The rugged, mountainous terrain, bordering many other districts and provinces, poses significant difficulties for management and firefighting. The unpredictable weather, prolonged dry spells, and strong winds increase the risk of forest fires.
Land disputes, encroachment, and illegal settlement still exist in some localities, hindering forest protection efforts. To overcome these challenges, Tram Tau is continuing to invest in modern fire prevention and control equipment and vehicles, promoting public awareness campaigns on forest protection, building a professional and semi-professional fire prevention and control force with good skills, and applying information technology to forest fire monitoring and warning.
Forest fire prevention and control is a regular, continuous, and challenging task, especially in a mountainous district like Tram Tau. However, with the proactive efforts of the government, the active involvement of various departments, and the responsible participation of the people, this work has achieved commendable results. These efforts not only contribute to protecting the district's "green lungs" but also create a solid foundation for the sustainable socio -economic development of the locality.
