Prospects from the model of breeding medicinal plants for ornamental purposes in Sa Dec City

On May 19th, the Department of Science and Technology of Dong Thap province organized a consultative council to evaluate and approve the results of a basic-level science and technology project titled "Research on propagation techniques and potted cultivation of some ornamental medicinal plants in Sa Dec City," led by the Provincial Testing and Inspection Center. Ms. Nguyen Lam Thanh Thuy, Director of the Department of Science and Technology and Chairwoman of the Council, presided over the approval meeting.

This research project is conducted in the context of the ornamental flower industry being one of the five key sectors of the Dong Thap province's agricultural restructuring plan for the period 2021-2025. Research and application of science and technology to diversify ornamental flower products and enhance the value of urban agriculture is a requirement in the current period. In particular, medicinal plants with aesthetic value and medicinal uses such as yellow chrysanthemums, honeysuckle, and honeysuckle are considered potential for development in a direction that combines ornamental purposes with health benefits.

The research project successfully developed an in vitro propagation process for yellow chrysanthemums and honeysuckle, achieving a 100% survival rate in the nursery. Honeysuckle, in particular, was propagated by cuttings combined with the growth stimulant NAA 800 ppm, grown on a substrate of clean soil and coconut fiber, resulting in superior growth. Simultaneously, the team determined the optimal substrate formula and fertilization regime for each plant type, promoting healthy growth, beautiful flowers, and shortened growth time.

A trial of potted plants on a scale of 3,000 pots at the Center for High-Tech Agricultural Applications has yielded promising results. Yellow chrysanthemums produced an average of over 800 flowers and buds per pot, with a flower lifespan of nearly 28 days. Honeysuckle plants reached a canopy diameter of over 65cm after 4 months of cultivation. The flowering plants averaged over 21cm in height, with well-developed roots, uniformly green leaves, and an attractive form.

The review board highly appreciated the scientific quality and practical relevance of the project. The research results not only provide a scientific basis for the propagation and cultivation of ornamental medicinal plants in pots in Sa Dec City but also contribute to enriching the products of the traditional flower village, expanding new directions for the Sa Dec ornamental flower industry in conjunction with urban agriculture and ecotourism . The board members unanimously agreed that the project has high potential for application and scalability, is suitable for the local climate and soil conditions, and meets the need for innovation in ornamental flower varieties according to consumer preferences. The board members unanimously approved the project and requested the implementing agency to finalize the report in accordance with regulations.
