Exhibition "Aspiration for Freedom" in Con Dao

"The Aspiration for Freedom" is the theme of an exhibition at the Public House historical site (Con Dao Special Zone, Ho Chi Minh City), organized by the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Museum and Library in collaboration with the Hoa Lo Prison Historical Site Management Board (Hanoi), which opened on the morning of April 14th.

With nearly 200 documents and images, the exhibition is designed in three parts: " Chains," "Soaring Through the Night," and "Continuing the Journey ," truthfully recreating the brutality of the colonial and imperial prison regime; at the same time, it vividly portrays the patriotic spirit and indomitable will of Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers.

In the section " Chains ," viewers are transported back to the dark context of the country under colonial and imperial rule, with its repressive apparatus and densely packed prisons. These include dark cells, shackles, and the brutal and insidious forms of torture inflicted by the enemy. But none of this could break the revolutionary spirit of the patriotic prisoners.

The section "Soaring Through the Night" recreates some of the daring prison escapes of generations of political prisoners at Hoa Lo, Son La, Con Dao, and Phu Quoc prisons… Each document and image is a vivid testament to the patriotism and indomitable will of the communists.

In the harsh confines of prison, amidst beatings, hunger, cold, the deep sea, and the towering mountains, communist prisoners still nurtured a fervent belief in freedom and the victory of the revolution. Some successfully escaped, returning to continue their struggle, but others were left unfinished, costing them blood, lives, and youth. All of them became shining symbols of Vietnamese patriotism.

The Coast Guard officers visiting the exhibition gained a deeper understanding of the value of peace.

The section "Continuing the Journey" introduces the journey of revolutionary fighters after escaping from colonial and imperial prisons, continuing to dedicate their strength and intellect to the cause of national liberation, building and developing the country.

Beyond simply recreating a tragic period of history, the exhibition has helped people and visitors understand the value of peace and independence, thereby transforming the "aspiration for freedom" of the prisoners of yesteryear into the aspiration to build a strong and prosperous nation for present and future generations.

The thematic exhibition "Aspiration for Freedom" will be open to the public until July 2026.
