The DF-17 hypersonic missile made a prominent appearance in footage released by Chinese state media to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army's rocket force, the force responsible for operating the majority of the country's ballistic missile arsenal.
The footage shows DF-17 units deploying in the field with self-propelled launch vehicles, maneuvering on the road and carrying out launch preparations.

The inclusion of the DF-17 and related propaganda is seen as Beijing's way of highlighting the rapid modernization of its missile forces over the past decade.
China was also the first country in the world to deploy Hypersonic Live Vehicle (HGV) missiles for tactical attack missions.
The DF-17 is considered one of the most innovative missile systems currently in existence, combining a ballistic missile with a hypersonic glide vehicle. Instead of flying along a predictable parabolic trajectory like traditional ballistic missiles, the DF-17's booster stage propels the glide vehicle into the upper atmosphere before separating.
The vehicle then glides toward the target at hypersonic speed, simultaneously performing continuous vertical and horizontal maneuvers. This combination of extremely high speed and maneuverability makes intercepting this type of weapon particularly difficult.
This has been demonstrated by recent demonstrations of Russia's Zircon missile and Iran's Fatta 2 in attacks targeting Ukraine and Israel. Numerous Israeli sources subsequently acknowledged that countering hypersonic missiles would require a completely new approach to missile defense systems.
Besides its ability to penetrate defenses , the DF-17 is also said to possess very high accuracy. The missile's hypersonic glide vehicle is believed to utilize advanced guidance systems that allow it to precisely strike high-value fixed targets such as air base command centers, logistics centers, or fortified military structures.
The high speed and low-altitude approach trajectory in the final stage of its flight significantly increased the DF-17's ability to penetrate air defenses before the enemy could react.

Another major advantage of the DF-17 is its mobile ground-based launch platform, mounted on a self-propelled launcher. The missile can quickly change position, be concealed, and deployed from various locations.
This mobility significantly increases the system's survivability, making it difficult for the enemy to track, locate, and plan a preemptive strike.
DF-17 units can continuously maneuver between combat zones or operate from both prepared positions and temporary field positions. The missile is also designed to integrate into China's unified attack and reconnaissance network.
The DF17 is believed to be capable of receiving target data from satellites, radar, over-the-horizon platforms, drones, maritime patrol aircraft, and many other intelligence platforms, significantly enhancing its combat capabilities in modern warfare environments.
One of the most important roles of the DF-17 is anti-ship warfare, particularly targeting large naval task forces operating in the Western Pacific.
Unlike traditional anti-ship ballistic missiles that plunge towards their targets at a steep angle, the DF-17's hypersonic glide vehicle can approach along a flatter trajectory, while also maneuvering to the sides during flight.
This makes the flight path much more unpredictable and significantly increases the difficulty of the interception mission. The hypersonic speed of the DF-17 also significantly shortens the reaction time of enemy warships.
A hypersonic glide vehicle can travel hundreds of kilometers in just minutes, forcing naval commanders to make decisions in extremely short time and reducing the chances of deploying interceptor missiles or electronic warfare measures.
The ability to attack both warships and military bases in the Pacific region makes the DF-17 a crucial component in China's anti-access/area denial (A2AD) strategy.
