China will issue 'personal identification codes' to humanoid robots.

(CLO) China is deploying a digital identity system for domestically produced humanoid robots, aiming to enhance management and promote standardization in the AI-powered robotics industry.

China has officially launched the “Comprehensive Humanoid Robot Lifecycle Management Service Platform,” a national system for assigning unique identifiers to bipedal, humanoid robots controlled by AI.

The system is being implemented by the Humanoid Robotics and Human Intelligence Standardization Committee (HEIS), under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China.

According to CCTV, these identification codes will be used to track robots throughout their entire lifecycle, from production and distribution to use and recycling. Chinese officials say the goal is to increase traceability and control risks amid the rapid growth of the humanoid robot industry.

Yu Xiuming, deputy director of the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI), said the system applies to the entire humanoid robot supply chain, including manufacturers, sales units, service providers, users, and recycling facilities.

Under the new mechanism, each robot will be assigned a four-part ID code. This includes a two-digit country code for managing cross-border transactions, a four-digit manufacturer code to identify the manufacturing company, a six-digit product code for robot classification, and a 17-digit serial number for each individual device.

The program has now been implemented with over 100 humanoid robot manufacturers in China. More than 28,000 robots of approximately 200 different models have been assigned digital identities.

This move comes as China accelerates the development of its humanoid robotics industry, viewing it as a new strategic technology sector. The Chinese government has recently been continuously promoting the establishment of technical standards, management mechanisms, and supply chain coordination to support this industry.

According to research published in January by market consulting firm International Data Corporation (IDC), the global market for humanoid robots grew by 508% last year, with approximately 18,000 robots shipped worldwide .

IDC says Chinese companies are emerging strongly thanks to their complete industrial supply chains and ability to scale production rapidly.

The Chinese humanoid robotics industry has also recently garnered attention after the E-Town robot halfmarathon held in Beijing last month, where robots and human athletes competed alongside each other.

The winning robot, named “Lightning,” developed by Honor, completed the distance in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This is approximately 6 minutes faster than the most recent world record for the same distance, set by Ugandan athlete Jacob Kiplimo.

Lightning also significantly outperformed last year's champion robot, "Tiangong," which took 2 hours and 40 minutes to complete the 2025 race. This large gap is seen as a sign of the very rapid development of the humanoid robotics industry in China in just one year.
