In a press release on June 1st, China's Ministry of Water Resources stated that according to the latest forecast, rainfall in northern northeastern China and large areas of southern China is expected to be 10 to 20 percent above average in June.
The ministry warned that flooding exceeding alarm levels could occur in the coming weeks in several major river basins, including tributaries of Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (also known as the Changjiang River), the Xijiang and Hanjiang rivers in the Zhujiang River basin, the Qiantangjiang River in Zhejiang Province, and the Minjiang River in Fujian Province.
In the face of severe and complex flooding threats, officials said they would strive to prevent casualties, dam breaches, damage to major dikes, and damage to critical infrastructure. The ministry will also prioritize protecting urban and rural water supplies, meeting seasonal irrigation needs for agricultural areas, and ensuring water supply for large-scale livestock farms, while committing to a range of measures to address emerging flood threats to people's lives and property.
China's Ministry of Water Resources emphasized the crucial role of large reservoirs in mitigating widespread flooding and stated that it will strengthen the unified and coordinated operation of these projects to improve flood control and disaster relief. The ministry urged Chinese water management agencies to make thorough preparations for activating flood storage and retention areas.
According to China's Ministry of Water Resources, since the start of this year's flood season on April 1st, a total of 146 rivers in the country have recorded water levels exceeding warning thresholds, a 50% increase compared to the average for the same period five years ago.
