In the 1920s, this place was a military camp, and in 1939 it was converted into the European-Asian Military Cadet School (École d'Enfants de Troupe de DaLat). In 1957, the Catholic Church converted the Military Cadet School into the Dalat University (also known as Thu Nhan School, meaning to cultivate people).

From 1958 to 1975, Dalat University was the first private university training institution in South Vietnam, a space for liberal culture -education , creativity and academic autonomy with the faculty being the leading professors in Saigon at that time. The lecture halls and university dormitories were named based on the ideas from the Four Books and Five Classics of Confucianism such as: Thuong Chi (raising the aspiration to live according to humanity), Minh Thanh (sincere, pure will), Kiem Ai (loving everyone equally), Lac Thien (being happy with good things)...
