From 1995, he took professional photographs using film cameras, only temporarily putting them aside in 2007. Because of his love for music since his early years studying Music and Art Education, he bought an organ to fulfill his passion and perform in local cultural events. Still strongly passionate about photography, he returned in 2022, continuing to pursue artistic photography.

He enjoys photographing everyday life and landscapes, and wants to experiment with different photographic techniques, hoping to offer viewers a new perspective and a different viewpoint. He dislikes setups; when shooting long exposures, he is always fascinated by the unexpected beauty of the light trails from fireworks, car headlights on the road... these are one-of-a-kind photos, because no two photos will be exactly alike.

“Photography has given me many valuable things: artistic awareness, preserving memorable moments, conveying my personal perspective, emotions, and messages through my work, and gaining new mentors and friends. I hope to create more beautiful photos that can inspire people to live, love life, and be more creative,” Vũ Thanh Nam shared.

Having won numerous awards in photography competitions both domestically and internationally, his photographs, with their diverse themes, realistically and vividly reflect the beauty of people in their lives and work: fishermen preparing to set sail, beads of sweat on the face of a pottery craftsman, golden rice fields, harvest season, childhood joys, water puppetry, a paradise of reeds...

In particular, the photo series "Honey of the Sea" captures the beekeeping and honey harvesting practices in mangrove forests, a valuable natural resource, affirming its value and motivating people to raise awareness about protecting mangrove forests. Or "New Life Beside the Ancient Bridge," which depicts the Chợ Lương tiled bridge in Hải Hậu, his hometown, one of the three most beautiful and ancient tiled bridges in Vietnam.

His work "Night Crane" brought him much joy: third prize in the "Vietnam - Photographic Perspective" photo contest in 2024 organized by the ASEAN Photojournalism and Art Club; exhibition in the photo contest celebrating the United Nations Vesak Day 2025 held at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy; and selection for the Tourism category of the VN-25 International Photo Contest.

Some of Vu Thanh Nam's notable works include: "The Procession at Thai Vi Temple," exhibited at the 2023 National Tourism Photography Contest; the photo series "Unique Buffalo Decoration Painting Contest," third prize in the "Aspiration for the Year of the Dragon" competition organized by Thanh Nien Online in 2024; and "In the Sound of the Evening Bell," third prize in the 2024 Nam Dinh Provincial Photography Contest.

In the November 2024 issue of the "Beauty of Vietnam" photo contest, organized by People's Television: The photo series "Secret of the Sea" won second prize; the photo series "Visiting Rach Village to watch water puppetry" won a consolation prize.

The photo series "Secrets of the Sea" was also exhibited at the ANT Festival in the Red River Delta region in 2024.
