On the interbank market, USD transaction volume during the week (May 15-19) increased by VND 451 billion/day compared to the previous week, reaching approximately VND 374,597 billion, averaging VND 74,919 billion/day. USD interest rates were higher than VND rates for some maturities under 1 month by about 0.05%/year. Overnight USD interest rates were 4.85%/year, 1 week 4.85%, 2 weeks 4.96%, and 1 month 5.1%. For maturities of 3 months or more, USD interest rates were lower by 1-1.3%/year, specifically 5.32%/year for 3 months and 6.3% for 6 months…
The US dollar strengthened against other currencies in the international market, with the USD-Index rising 0.3 points to 104.18. Positive US economic data supported the dollar's appreciation. US GDP for the first quarter performed better than expected, increasing 1.3% compared to the anticipated 1.1%. Additionally, weekly jobless claims were significantly lower than market expectations. The number of claims increased by 4,000 last week to 229,000, lower than Reuters' estimate of 225,000.
In addition, investors sought refuge in the USD as the market remained concerned that US lawmakers and the administration had yet to reach an agreement on extending the government debt. However, the House of Representatives indicated that negotiators were making progress on the issue. Reuters also reported that Democrats and Republicans were nearing an agreement.
