From emissions to "smart green powder"

Based on the idea of ​​utilizing exhaust gases to create environmentally friendly products, a group of students from Lao Cai Specialized High School researched and developed the project "Smart Green Chalk - AI technology to recycle exhaust gases into dust-free knowledge".

To complete the project, the group of students diligently researched and practiced through each stage.

Driven by concerns about utilizing emissions generated during production, a group of students from Lao Cai Specialized High School developed the project "Smart Green Chalk - AI Technology for Recycling Emissions into Dust-Free Knowledge." In 2026, the project won third prize at the 8th National Startup Competition (SV-Startup), becoming a source of pride for the teachers and students of Lao Cai Specialized High School.

Behind the project is the result of serious research by high school students who aspire to contribute to reducing the impact of environmental pollution and creating a product with practical applications.

During the 2025-2026 school year, a group of five students from Lao Cai Specialized High School diligently researched, experimented, and perfected their product in the school's laboratory. They come from different specialized classes , each with their own strengths, but all share a passion for science and a desire to create a product that benefits the community.

This project applies artificial intelligence (AI) combined with fine dust filtration and utilizes solar energy for its implementation.

Driven by the increasing air pollution, especially the greenhouse gas CO₂, a group of students conceived the idea of ​​utilizing this pollutant to create an educational product. After months of research, they successfully developed a system to capture CO₂ from the environment, applying artificial intelligence (AI) combined with fine dust filtration and solar energy to produce biodegradable chalk.

The project's unique feature is its ability to convert CO₂ into CaCO₃ – the main component in the production of blackboard chalk. The students have transformed an air pollution hazard into useful, environmentally friendly chalk that is safer for both teachers and students.

To perfect the product, the team members continuously adjusted the production process and improved the quality of the chalk. Initial test batches had some limitations, such as being easily broken, dusty, and having less than ideal colors. Through persistent research, testing, and evaluation, the product quality gradually improved, better meeting practical usage requirements.

Behind this product lies the relentless research and dedication of the students. Failed trials did not discourage them; instead, they became the basis for further adjustments, refinements to the process, and improvement of product quality.

Each member of the team is responsible for a different stage in the product development process.

Beyond simply creating a product with practical applications, the project also demonstrates students' concern for environmental issues and their ability to apply scientific and technological knowledge to solve real-world problems.

Throughout the project, the team members proactively sought out and acquired extensive knowledge beyond their curriculum, ranging from AI programming and chemical reactions to the operation of solar energy systems. Each stage required precision, perseverance, and teamwork to create a unique product.

Throughout the research process, the dedicated teachers of Lao Cai Specialized High School accompanied the students. Beyond providing professional advice, the teachers also inspired and instilled confidence in the students, encouraging them to think outside the box, take action, and pursue their creative ideas.

Mr. Truong Trieu Thang, a teacher at Lao Cai Specialized High School, said: "Through the competition, students have the opportunity to consolidate their learned knowledge and apply it to practice to develop creative ideas."

The "Smart Chalk" project is not only a practical product created by high school students, but also a testament to the innovative spirit of modern education – where students are encouraged to explore, research, and apply their knowledge to solve social problems.

In the remote, border region, students at Lao Cai Specialized High School are showcasing a generation of young people with strong character and a thirst for creativity. From these "smart green chalk" creations, many more scientific ideas will be nurtured and developed. Dreams that begin in the classroom, from the familiar chalk dust, can become the driving force for them to continue researching and innovating, contributing to positive changes in life and the environment.
