Tuan Anh: 'I starved myself and had my teeth stained yellow to play the villain.'

Actor Tuan Anh revealed that he fasted all day to perform the vulgar and greedy eating scenes of the character Bat in the film "Life Is Still Beautiful".

The actor talks about his role and the behind-the-scenes transformation into Bat, the thug in the film "Life Is Still Beautiful ." A playboy burdened with debt, Bat causes all sorts of trouble for his sister, Luyen (Thanh Huong), and also puts many others in a difficult position.

- What led you to this role?

- I graduated from the acting training class at the Vietnam Television Film Production Center and have had brief appearances in several other series. For this new role, after casting, I was chosen partly because of my appearance and suitable acting style. I specialize in playing comedic roles or villainous characters. Bat is a hateful destroyer but still has a humorous side, which suits me well.

I'm happy that my role has been well-received by the audience, with both praise and criticism. That's a great motivation for a young actor like me.

- How did you research and prepare to play the role of a two-faced, devious villain?

- Since I was a student, I've worked many different jobs to earn money to pursue my passion for art, encountering many deceitful and opportunistic people along the way. I've always observed, filtered, and incorporated this into my roles.

As my first role with a clear story and destiny, I aimed to perform well so that the audience would remember me. In the early days, I felt quite pressured acting alongside many well-known names like artists Thanh Quy, Hoang Hai, and Thanh Huong, fearing that if I didn't do well, it would affect the progress of the entire crew. Thanks to the guidance of director Danh Dung, I was able to keep up with the intensity and working style.

- Many viewers praised the character Bat for his impressive appearance. What was the makeup process like for you to embody the role?

- Every day, I arrived at the set early and ate quickly. Because my teeth are quite white, I had to wear yellow makeup to make them look yellow and darken my skin tone. The process of applying the yellow makeup to my teeth was quite elaborate and easily faded, so throughout the filming process, I limited my eating and drinking to prevent the color from wearing off.

Besides the praise, I read some comments from viewers saying that Bat's teeth "looked disgusting, I couldn't swallow rice" or "those teeth could cook a whole bunch of green bananas just by breathing on them." I think the details, from hair to clothes, of each character were carefully considered by the director and the film crew. Bat is a street thug, so of course he couldn't have a neat appearance.

- Which scenes from the film stand out in your memory?

- Filming took place during the summer, amidst the scorching heat, with the entire crew crammed into cramped rented rooms in the Long Bien market area. I filmed many scenes involving chases, fights, and physical abuse, which easily exhausted me. I wasn't afraid of injury, but because I had to shout so much, my voice easily became hoarse, affecting the live sound recording. The crew usually scheduled the difficult scenes for me at the end of the day so that the actors could rest at night and ensure their health for the next day.

Furthermore, Bat lives a nomadic life, is short of money, and has many scenes depicting slovenly eating habits, like someone starving, which evokes mixed feelings of both hatred and pity from the viewers. Before filming these scenes, I would often fast from morning. When the cameras started rolling, I would eat more, appearing crude and impolite. This also helped me avoid discomfort if the director asked me to reshoot scenes multiple times. I also enjoyed the scenes interacting with Mrs. Tinh (actress Thanh Quy), as they gave me a feeling of familiarity and closeness, like being with a family member.

- After playing the role of Bat, what are your plans for your acting career?

- Many people tease me, saying, "After playing a villain, you probably won't be able to get married." I don't think much about those side issues; I just focus on fulfilling my responsibilities. I once applied to the University of Theatre and Film but didn't get in. Not graduating with an acting degree, I sometimes felt lost, only knowing how to act instinctively. Three years ago, when I joined a training course, I learned how to develop my strengths. In the future, I want to try my hand at many different types of characters, both good and bad.

Tuan Anh, born in 1996, graduated from the Academy of Journalism and Communication. Passionate about acting, he has filmed many comedy videos , created vlogs, and sought out casting groups. In 2019, Tuan Anh was accepted into the acting training class at the Vietnam Television Film Production Center. Before starring in "Life Is Still Beautiful ," he had a short role in the film " 11 Months and 5 Days ."
