Sharing with Dan Viet Newspaper reporter, Lai Gia Khai, grade 11 Math 1 student, High School for Gifted Students, Hanoi National University of Education, said he was very happy to become the valedictorian of Math in the National Excellent Student Competition for the 2024-2025 school year. Khai excellently achieved a score of 33.5 points.
"I still can't believe that I am the valedictorian of this Math exam. From the beginning, I didn't focus on winning the prize but took the exam with the mindset of asserting myself. That made me excited and nervous when I entered the exam room," Khai said.

According to Khai, this year's math exam for gifted students had difficult questions at the end of part 1 and part 2, so it took a lot of time. I just tried my best, took the exam seriously and submitted it like other exams. The difference here was that the atmosphere was more stressful. I think that was also a motivation and luckily I did better than expected," Khai shared.
After finishing the test, Khai predicted that he would get 33.5 points and this score was not different from the result he received.
Having achieved this, Khai said he thanks the teachers and parents for supporting the team a lot during their studies and exam preparation, helping them to just focus on studying.
Revealing more about himself, Khai said that he is from Ha Nam and has loved Math since primary school. The male student set a goal to major in Math in the future. With that passion, Khai won first prize in the exam for excellent 9th grade students in Ha Nam province and was directly admitted to the 10th grade specialized in Math at the University of Education High School. In grade 10, Khai achieved a number of other achievements in Math such as first prize at the school level, gold medal in the excellent student exam in the Northern Coastal and Delta region, gold medal in the Natural Science Olympiad... And in grade 11, Khai won first prize in the National Excellent Student Exam.

It is known that Khai is renting a room with his sister near the school. In addition to studying, Khai often listens to music and reads stories. The national top student in Mathematics reads a variety of stories such as those by writer Nguyen Nhat Anh, No Family, Les Miserables, 3 Musketeers...
Currently, Khai has no deep orientation on what field to study or what career to do in the future, but he likes business so he will lean towards economic schools.
"Khai is a solid student with great determination"
Mr. Truong Trong Khanh, homeroom teacher of grade 11 Math 1, head of the Math team at the University of Education High School for the Gifted, shared his pride when having a student win the valedictorian position: "Although entering grade 10 without much exposure to advanced knowledge, Khai is a solid student, has great willpower, determination and has made remarkable progress. This is also demonstrated by the results in a number of exams in the past 2 years, Khai has won high prizes".
Speaking more about the 11th grade student in the national math competition team, teacher Khanh said: "Khai knows how to listen and follow the teacher's training plan and program. During the exam preparation process, there were times when he encountered difficulties and worries about knowledge as well as taking the exam with 12th grade students. However, I encouraged him that he still has time, as long as he knows how to study, he will develop his abilities well. There is still a long way ahead, so I hope he continues to try hard."

In this year's national math competition, the National University of Education High School for Gifted Students had 8 students winning prizes, including 1 first prize, 3 second prizes, 3 third prizes and 1 consolation prize. Overall assessment of the team, Mr. Khanh said: "Unfortunately, some students performed very well during their studies, but their mentality was not good enough for the exam, so they did not achieve the desired results."
Mr. Khanh is in charge of the school's Math team for the 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2024-2025 school years. Last year, two of his students won first place nationally. Although he always motivates students to study their best and compete to win the highest prize with their abilities, in his opinion, this is just a competition.
"The excellent student competition does not fully evaluate the students' abilities. Those who win high prizes are excellent and brave, but those who win lower prizes are not inferior. There are also students with different thinking, surprising teachers, but "talent is fate". I always tell you, there are many other things we need to conquer ahead. You should not put pressure on yourself, do not worry about whether you win a prize or not. What matters is how you grow up and what skills you have, that is the long-term measure," he said.
