"After 24 seasons in the Premier League, I feel this is the right time to end my playing career," midfielder Milner wrote on social media on June 1st.
The announcement signifies that, after nearly a quarter century of playing top-level football, Milner concludes a long and impressive career with 658 appearances in England's top league.
The player born in 1986 surpassed former legend Gareth Barry's record of 653 appearances in February, when Brighton beat Brentford 2-0. He then went on to make four more appearances, setting a remarkable milestone that will be difficult to break.

Milner's career began at Leeds United, the club he loved since childhood. He made his Premier League debut in 2002 at the age of 16, before becoming the youngest player to score in the league at the time, with a goal at 16 years and 356 days old.
Subsequently, midfielder Milner played for Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Man City, Liverpool, and Brighton. He also spent time on loan at Swindon Town early in his career.
What makes Milner so valued is not just the number of appearances he's made. Throughout his career, the English midfielder has always been willing to adapt to tactical demands, from central midfield and winger to full-back.
Milner's most successful years were with Manchester City and Liverpool. While playing for Manchester City, he won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the League Cup.
After moving to Liverpool, the English star went on to add to his collection of titles, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

Milner won numerous titles during his 24-year playing career.
Milner became an important part of the Merseyside team's successful period thanks to his experience, discipline, and ability to play in multiple positions.
At the international level, Milner has 61 caps for England, participating in two European Championships and two World Cup finals. Including both club and national team appearances, he has played a total of 964 matches.
"There were times I had to fight to avoid relegation, times I won titles, played in Europe and represented England. What I cherish most are the people and friendships I've made throughout that journey," Milner shared.
His final season brought a fitting end to his career. After a period of serious injury that left him "unable to lift his feet," Milner returned to play, helping Brighton secure their second European Cup qualification in the club's history.
