The fact that Congo is at risk of missing out on the 2026 World Cup is no longer a joke. |
According to information from the White House's World Cup security task force, the Congo national team will not be allowed to participate in the 2026 World Cup if they do not comply with strict quarantine procedures before the tournament begins. This is considered an emergency measure to limit the risk of Ebola spreading during the world's biggest football event.
Andrew Giuliani, director of the White House World Cup task force, confirmed that Congo is experiencing a serious Ebola outbreak. The official stated that the US has requested the Congolese Football Federation and the government to move the entire team to Belgium to train in a “quarantine bubble.”
During their 21-day stay in Europe, the Congo players will only live and train in a specially controlled area. The team is also scheduled to play two warm-up friendly matches in Belgium to maintain their fitness before the World Cup.
This information quickly attracted attention because the 2026 World Cup will take place in the US, Canada, and Mexico, requiring extremely strict health checks. Previously, the US had implemented numerous entry restrictions for those who had recently traveled to Congo due to concerns about the spread of the disease.
FIFA has not yet issued any further comments beyond confirming that it is closely monitoring the situation. Meanwhile, the Congo national team continues to maintain that they are safe enough to participate in the World Cup if they complete the required quarantine procedures.
