Tuyen Lam: Efforts to combat drought for the winter-spring crop.

QTO - The prolonged period of extreme heat is posing a significant challenge to agricultural production in the province. In the mountainous commune of Tuyen Lam, the rapid decrease in water levels in reservoirs and dams is causing many areas of winter-spring rice crops, currently in the flowering stage, to face the risk of severe drought.

This year, the mountainous commune of Tuyen Lam planted over 70 hectares of rice during the winter-spring season. Currently, the rice plants in the fields are entering the flowering stage. For the rice plant's growth process, this is a crucial stage that directly determines the yield of the entire crop.

However, due to the prolonged hot weather, more than half of the local rice fields are currently at risk of severe water shortage. This situation is caused by the fact that water levels in ponds, lakes, and streams in the area have all dried up, making it impossible to supply water to the fields.

Mr. Ho Chi Thanh, a resident of Ca Xen village, Tuyen Lam commune, is genuinely worried about the difficulties and harsh conditions this year's winter-spring crop season due to drought. According to Mr. Thanh, although the government has provided support to the villagers from the beginning of the season, including land preparation, seed distribution, and fertilizer, the most crucial growth stage has seen a severe water shortage.

More worryingly, some rice fields have started to burn and it will be very difficult to restore them if there is no rain in the coming days. Although the commune's People's Committee has invested in machinery and water pumps to combat the drought for the people, the current water supply only meets a small fraction of the actual needs.

Faced with unfavorable weather conditions, the leaders of Tuyen Lam commune People's Committee did not hesitate to overcome difficulties and personally inspect key production areas.

According to Mr. Dinh Xuan Thuong, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Tuyen Lam commune, this year's winter-spring crop experienced extreme weather conditions. This is the first year that drought has occurred precisely during the rice heading stage. Given this urgent situation, Tuyen Lam commune has focused on decisive leadership, with villages and hamlets urgently deploying mobile pumping stations in any area with water to promptly supply irrigation water to the fields.

Over the past 10 days, local authorities have been operating pumps continuously to try and save rice fields affected by drought. The commune has also proactively arranged additional backup pumps to maximize the use of remaining depleted water resources. In addition to machinery, manpower in villages and hamlets has been mobilized to dredge the canal system and clear waterways. This is a practical measure to minimize water loss.

Thanks to this, most rice fields in the area have been irrigated by now, which is expected to minimize the impact on final crop yields and production. However, although the rice's moisture has been temporarily maintained, the economic burden remains significant. With rising oil prices, the increased fuel costs for water pumps are making the winter-spring crop less economically viable.

To promptly prevent and combat drought and protect agricultural production from extreme weather events, local authorities are urgently implementing a comprehensive range of response measures. Initially, Tuyen Lam commune is focusing on encouraging residents to adopt water-saving irrigation methods, while also proactively storing and maximizing the use of remaining water in ponds and lakes for irrigation.

In the long term, the commune will continue to promote awareness campaigns, forest management, and protection to sustainably maintain natural water sources; at the same time, it will propose to the competent authorities the implementation of reservoir and dam projects to enhance its capacity to respond to droughts in the coming years.
