The US dollar fell to its lowest level in months against the euro and the yen, as data showed the labor market in the world's largest economy slowed last month, creating fewer jobs than expected.

Today's USD exchange rate on the world market (March 8, 2025)

The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the USD against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), closed at 103.62 - down 0.37 points compared to March 7, 2025.

The report suggests the Federal Reserve remains on track to cut interest rates multiple times this year. US futures prices 78 basis points (bps) of easing this year following the non-farm payrolls report, or approximately three rate cuts of 25 bps each, according to LSEG calculations. The first rate cut is likely to follow in June.

On the other hand, the euro continued its upward trend, heading for its best week in 16 years with a 4.6% gain against the dollar, driven by Germany's game-changing fiscal reforms. The currency reached a four-month high of $1.0888 after jobs data. It was last trading at $1.0863, up 0.7%.

BofA Global Research has raised its year-end forecast for the euro to $1.15, up from its previous forecast of $1.10.

Against the Japanese currency, the greenback fell 0.2% against the yen to 147.65 yen, after earlier dropping to a five-month low of 147.05 yen.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the non-farm payrolls rose by 151,000 jobs last month, following a downward revision of 125,000 jobs in January. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a 160,000 job increase after previously reporting a 143,000 job increase in January.

"The jobs report was weaker than expected. This is concerning because it doesn't account for the recent government job cuts from DOGE, so it suggests businesses are pausing hiring until there's more certainty about tariff policy and the economic outlook," Glen Smith, chief investment officer at GDS Wealth Management in Flower Mound, Texas, said in email comments. The firm has $1.2 billion in assets.
